4 years ago our lives changes forever. Our little girl was diagnosed with Type 1. It was in the middle of the pandemic and we had to spend the night in the ER because there were no beds left on the Pediatric floor. From a scared little 7 year old to the warr1or she is today, Dahlia has kicked Diabetes butt, every single day for 4 years! Through diagnosis, DKA, fundraising, getting Barkley, to basically crushing life, Dahlia never stops making us proud. “Normal life” seemed impossible 4 years ago, now we know that Dahlia is unstoppable! Happy 4th Diaversary! Happy Thrive Day, Dahlia!

We are so incredibly lucky to have a service dog for Dahlia. She is so well trained and has saved Dahlia multiple times. Many times before Barkley alerts, we get “the stare”. Here she is, right before an alert, giving me the famous stare!

Last night was a long night.

Sometimes Type 1 looks like winning your spelling bee, or playing one of the leads in the school musical, or having fun at dance class. Other times, it looks like being woken up to eat applesauce (again) in the middle of the night because your blood sugar has been low for a while.

This is the part of Diabetes that the outside world doesn’t see: middle on the night finger pokes (she doesn’t even wake up for those anymore), “midnight picnics”, middle of the night shots and/or sight changes. And these Warr1ors get up the next day and carry on as if it never happened.

Fatigue and burnout are real with diabetes. Diabetics and their caregivers make so many extra decisions a day just to get through the day. There are no days off. It’s endless. We try and teach Dahlia to be responsible for her condition, but we also take over when she is showing signs of burnout.

It was Spa Day for Miss Barkley Girl! She’s still a little damp from her bath, but I swear she lost 10 lbs of hair! She’s such a good girl! She deserves a day of pampering after an all-day outing yesterday. 💙
