Playology Pediatric Therapy

Playology Pediatric Therapy Occupational Therapy A little bit about Havilah...
There are so many aspects of my job that I love and I honestly feel this is what I am meant to do.

What is OT...
Occupational Therapy (OT) is a branch of healthcare that helps people of all ages who have physical, sensory, or cognitive problems. OT can help to improve a person's independence in all areas of life and addresses upper extremity conditions, neurological conditions, fine motor skills, self regulation, sensory processing, and basic life skills such as dressing, eating, and bathing. Mission of Playology...
To provide excellent occupational therapy services to children in need, pregnant and postpartum mothers, to empower and support families in all capacities, to meet families where they are at, and to allow for the family unit to be involved and grow together. I am a pediatric occupational therapist. I have worked in the most critical of settings. I have helped children with gunshot wounds learn to write and dress themselves again. I have cried with mothers in the PICU as they struggle between being at the hospital with one child while another child is at home. I have prepared families to bring their child home to a new normal following an accident. I have helped children with sensory processing disorder tolerate the feeling of their pants. I have helped babies with cerebral palsy learn how to reach, use two hands together, and grasp toys. I have made splints for stroke survivors, broken wrists, fingers, and elbows. I help children and parents adapt their lives so that their disability is not limiting. I have also been that mother who has decorated a hospital room to make it feel like home. I have tried my best to navigate raising one child in the hospital while raising another at home. I have pulled myself in every direction to ensure that my career is thriving while also maintaining a healthy marriage and safe children. I see you parents, the ones that have stayed the night at the hospital, the ones who are on 6-12 months long waiting lists trying to get the therapy that your child needs, I hope to fill that need. I hope that you never feel unheard or alone.

Let’s make the most of the snow!! Our kids are watching and listening to us. A positive attitude doesn’t always come naturally, as parents, we need to model it. We have the opportunity to build resilience in our kiddos by showing them that the weather can’t stop us. Carve out a few minutes to embrace this snow!

Each one of us is different and have specific needs. Your kiddo may need a specific plan but here are some ideas to help kids of all abilities!

❄️ Dressing can be hard! Give your child extra time to try to dress themselves as best as they can. Give them choices, such as Would you like me to help with the socks or the coat? And remember that all these layers helps to provide proprioceptive input which increases body awareness, strength, and sensory processing!
❄️ Invest in snow goggles if your child has sensitive eyes. The wind and the reflection from the sun off the bright white snow can be a lot for some to handle!
❄️ Build a snow fort or a dig a hole in the snow to make a comfy snow chair together to provide proprioceptive input through heavy work. This also helps a child work on motor-planning skills which translates to all areas of life!
❄️ Sled down a hill for vestibular input through movement. Have your child pull you or another child on the sled for heavy work. Talk about what you are doing! Children with apraxia need movement to speak!
❄️ Make a pile of snow and take turns crashing into it for proprioceptive input!
❄️ Have your child shovel snow with a shovel that’s just their size to provide both shoulder strengthening and heavy work.
❄️ Have a snowball fight or throw snowballs at targets to work on hand-eye coordination and object-manipulation skills.
❄️ Hide brightly colored objects in the snow and have your child use their visual scanning skills to try to find them all.
❄️ Make snow angels and compare and contrast the differences in sizes and shapes.
❄️ Fill sq**rt bottles with food coloring and water. Spray the snow different colors to make fun patterns on the snow and work on fine-motor strengthening.
❄️ Build a snowman to provide heavy work while rolling the snow into balls. Add as many features as possible to help build body awareness.
❄️ Bring the snow inside in a container and play cars or other toys in the snow!
❄️ Make snow popsicles, slushies, or ice cream by adding in fruit or juice that you have on hand!

Fresh air and playing outside is good for the soul! Don’t forget to enjoy these moments now because kids grow up in the blink of an eye 🩵

As speech, occupational, and physical therapists, we set goals that matter to the child! Sometimes talking looks like using an AAC device. Sometimes walking looks like using a gait trainer. Sometimes self regulation looks like self advocacy. Let’s remember to celebrate the uniqueness in our kiddos and watch as they bloom!

Today’s tip after a long week: Try a 2-minute ‘feelings check-in’ with your kiddo after school, daycare or just the week at home. Let them pick an emoji, doodle a feeling, or show it with a toy. This builds emotional vocabulary & helps them decompress. 🩵
