Agrihood: Defined by Architectural Digest as, “a community with an emphasis on sustainable, protected outdoor space…” In practice, the concept is realized as a development that integrates agriculture and horticulture practices into a residential neighborhood. An agrihood development may offer edible landscaping along walking paths, integration with a neighboring farm by weaving grazing pasture between residences, or provide a community garden that residents may tend and from which they may harvest.

Architecteam has had the opportunity to develop concepts for several proposed agrihood developments across the Central New York region, we are hopeful a community will be realized in the near future as public interest continues to grow on the concept.

Pictured is one of our townhouse concepts for an agrihood. The architecture, while offering modern amenities and living arrangements, is inspired by the numerous century-old farmsteads that dot our rural communities.

The CNY Biotech Accelerator responded to the growing need for space for bioscience business incubation by initiating a planning concept to expand the existing facility in Syracuse, N.Y. The project sought to accommodate some of the most promising med-tech startups in the industry. We worked with Upstate Medical University, the CNYBAC team, potential future tenants, an established bioscience company and leaders of an autism research and therapy center to create a program and test fit for the proposed new expansion. The 130,000 SF addition would house, additional BSL2 lab space, clinical and educational space for the Autism Center of Excellence, and 4 floors of additional lab and administrative space for the bioscience tenant. There is also space available for future uses and a large outdoor recreation space, which is unique to the urban location of the site.
