This morning, the Department of Emergency Medicine and Upstate Trauma held our monthly Trauma Drill in the Adult Emergency Department. Today’s training focused on caring for a pregnant patient during a serious emergency.

In this realistic scenario, teams practiced responding to a patient involved in a bad car crash with severe internal injuries. When someone is pregnant, emergency care becomes more complex because providers are caring for two patients at the same time: the mother and her baby.

This drill highlighted strong hospital collaboration, bringing together Upstate’s Level 1 Trauma team and surgeons with physicians from Crouse Hospital who specialize in caring for pregnant patients, along with members of EMS and Emergency Department teams.

These trainings ensure our teams are ready to act quickly, work together, and provide the best possible care when every second counts.

Thank you to Upstate Emergency Medicine, Upstate Trauma, Crouse OB, and EMS for your continued teamwork and dedication.

👏👏Shoutout to our Trauma Injury Prevention Coordinator, Anthony Scalise, who presented at TraumaCon in Austin, TX last week!

Anthony shared his research team’s research, “Geospatial Mapping of EMS-Dispatched Falls Among older Adults: A Five-Year Descriptive Study,” highlighting how EMS data can be used to identify local trends and prioritize injury prevention efforts and advocacy where they’re needed most.

We’re proud to see Upstate contributing to the national conversation on data-driven trauma prevention and representing our region and teams on a national stage! 🎉

April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month!

Distracted driving puts lives at risk every day. Stay focused and help keep our roads safe.

Simple ways to reduce distractions while driving:
• Put your phone away. No texting, calling, or scrolling
• Use hands-free features if needed
• Limit passengers and keep noise levels down
• Set your GPS before you start driving
• Avoid eating or drinking behind the wheel
• Get enough rest before driving
• Lead by example and encourage others to drive distraction-free

Eyes on the road. Hands on the wheel. Your life depends on it.

It’s Public Health Week and Upstate Community Hospital put on another wonderful event to highlight departments who support community health initiatives.

Two of our fantastic Stop the Bleed instructors, Janette Garlock Miller and Liz Sapio, are seen below in the images showing attendees a preview of what Stop the Bleed is all about while representing Upstate Trauma and the Safe Kids Upstate NY Coalition.

Thank you as well to our Trauma Program Administrative Assistant, Erica Buck, for supporting the event by selling trauma t-shirts.

Lastly, great work to Beth Sellers for organizing this fantastic event.

Upstate Trauma was proud to return for the second year in a row to provide Stop the Bleed training to Upstate University’s PA students.

This was a fantastic group of future providers who were highly engaged and eager to learn life-saving hemorrhage control techniques. It is always encouraging to see the next generation of clinicians building the skills and confidence needed to respond in emergencies.

Thank you for welcoming us back—we appreciate the opportunity to be part of your training!

A day late, but still worth saying.

Happy Doctors Day to our incredible trauma surgeons and residents- this group is something special. The level of commitment you bring every day goes far beyond what most people ever see. Long hours, tough calls, and the kind of pressure that doesn’t let up -but you continue to show up with focus, skill, and real compassion for patients and families in their worst moments.

What you do doesn’t just impact our hospital- it matters to this entire region. People rely on you at their most vulnerable, and you deliver in ways that are both technically exceptional and deeply human.

From everyone here at Upstate Trauma, we are Grateful to work alongside you and see firsthand the difference you make every single day. Thank you!

This course combines hands-on skills, evidence-based practice, and real-world application to ensure nurses are prepared to deliver high-quality trauma care when it matters most.

👏 A huge thank you to our participants and instructors for their dedication to advancing trauma care across our region.
