✨ Dr. Seth Jeong (PGY3) gave a really nice talk on biologics and their role in chronic rhinosinusitis last week at our Grand Rounds. It’s great hearing about biologically informed surgery and what options we have for our patients when traditional medical management and endoscopic sinus surgery isn’t quite enough for their disease. Great talk, Dr. Jeong!!! 👏🏼

University Otolaryngology Associates Research Fellow Position
Department of Otolaryngology - SUNY Upstate Medical University

Description:
1 position available per year for medical students interested in Otolaryngology. (Students entering their 3rd year, 4th year, and those completing medical school will be considered.)

The fellow will collaborate with two primary faculty (Dr. Eve Champaloux, Laryngology and Dr. Kiranya Arnold, Head and Neck Oncology) to conduct research projects in various Otolaryngology subspecialty areas. Specific projects will depend on the fellow’s interests and goals, as well as their pre-existing research skills. Available projects include basic science, clinical, and translational projects. Throughout the year, the fellow will have the opportunity to help complete projects in progress and initiate projects depending on their skills and interests. The expectation will be multiple abstracts for presentation at national meetings and manuscripts for publication in peer reviewed journals. Additionally, the fellow will be expected to ingrain themselves in the culture of the department. Structured mentorship opportunities will be built into the program to develop research skills and prepare the fellow for residency in Otolaryngology.

The fellowship will run from June/July to May/June of each year (12-month position). A monthly stipend will be provided to cover living expenses, and additional funding is available for national meeting presentations and publication fees.

Dr. Adam Hatala gave an excellent talk on Wednesday about The Otolaryngologist’s Impact on Sleep 😴 he made excellent points about our role as otolaryngologists on sleep - particularly where it pertains to obstructive sleep apnea and surgical options for this. Great talk, Dr. Hatala!!! 👏🏼

The weather may be chilly but the coffee and treats at our annual shENT brunch kept us warm 😎 We had a very fruitful discussion this afternoon about time management and the art of delegation. It’s so nice to have such incredible female mentors here in the community! 💛

🧐 We enjoyed some insightful academic discussions, delicious food, and fabulous desserts at last night’s journal club! Our articles of discussion were geared towards Pediatric ENT and Laryngology. We focused a lot of our discussion on retrograde cricopharyngeal dysfunction - everything from Botox injections to BERP therapy 🫢🫧

✨ Dr. Dhruv Patel (Chief Resident) gave his final Grand Rounds presentation as a resident at SUNY Upstate this morning. He gave a great talk on Congenital Hearing Loss - taking us from newborn hearing screens all the way to precision therapies. An excellent way to end his grand rounds chapter at Upstate! Great talk, Dr. Patel!!! 👏🏼

Proud of our SUNY Upstate representation at AAO-HNS this past weekend in Indianapolis!

Dr. Seth Jeong (PGY3) gave a fantastic oral presentation on office-based procedures for chronic rhinitis and nasal obstruction 👏🏼 👃🏽

Two of our attendings, Dr. Arnold and Dr. Obayemi, sat on a panel which discussed the intersection between rhinologists and facial plastic surgeons for workup and treatment of nasal obstruction 👏🏼 👃🏽

Kelly Kim (Upstate medical students) presented a case report poster on a unique genetic mutation leading to craniofacial malformations! 👏🏼
