Chip manufacturers have been dumping forever chemicals into rivers for decades.
They knew. They lobbied against research into it. They fought disclosure requirements. Micron alone spent $19.6 million lobbying Washington in the first half of 2022.
Now they're coming to Central New York with $14 billion in public subsidies — and a deal that lets them discharge whatever they want into our waterways with no enforceable limits.
PFAS are synthetic chemicals used in semiconductor manufacturing. They don't break down. Ever. They accumulate in water, in fish, in human blood. They're linked to cancer, thyroid disease, and developmental problems in children. Scientists call them forever chemicals because that's exactly what they are — once they're in the environment, they're there permanently.
The only way to stop them from reaching our water is a treatment plant specifically designed to destroy them. The technology exists. The federal funding exists. What doesn't exist yet is a requirement to use either one.
Micron's treatment plant hasn't been built yet. The contract hasn't been signed yet. Once it is, the design is locked. No retrofit. No do-over. The county needs to hear from you before that happens.
