Most people don’t realise there are two major depictions of Lilith in scripture and tradition.

The first appears in Book of Isaiah 34:14, where the Hebrew word lilit is used. Many translations soften it to “night creature,” but the name remains. Here, she is not Adam’s wife. She is a desert being, a night spirit dwelling among ruins. This Lilith echoes older Mesopotamian lilītu spirits forces of wind, wilderness, and the untamed night. She is not a fallen woman. She is a liminal presence outside human order.

Centuries later, a second Lilith emerges in the Alphabet of Ben Sira. In this medieval text, she is Adam’s first wife, created from the same earth. When she refuses sexual subordination and insists on equality, she leaves Eden rather than submit. After her departure, she becomes demonized in folklore.

These are not the same origin story. One is prophetic poetry. The other is medieval satire and mythmaking. Yet they merge over time especially in mystical texts like the Zohar, where Lilith becomes a cosmic shadow figure.

One Lilith represents the wilderness beyond control.
The other represents a woman who refused hierarchy.

Across centuries, her image shifts but the pattern remains.
Each era reshaped her in response to its fear of female autonomy.

Understanding the difference doesn’t weaken her myth. It makes it sharper. The question is no longer whether Lilith was “real.”
The question is why every era needed her to be feared.
