- Washington State is a Direct Access state!

What is Direct Access?
- Direct Access in PT is the ability for a patient to see a physical therapist for evaluation and treatment without a doctor’s referral, often allowing for quicker access to care, and saving time, money, and potentially reducing unnecessary tests.

- Even though state laws allow direct access to PT some insurance plans may still require a referral for payment/reimbursement, so it is recommended to check your insurance to verify coverage before scheduling your appointment 🙂

- Give us a call if you have a musculoskeletal injury and would like to get scheduled!!

Goodbye Christmas, Hello New Year! Here is a friendly reminder that we will be closed on New Year’s Day, but back in business Thursday and Friday! Now is a great time to join our exercise membership if you have been thinking about getting more active! Look how happy these guys look! We wish you all a happy and safe New Year!

Meet Westgate PT’s September Patient of the Month, Earl!

Earl recently turned 91 years young. He was active in sports throughout his life. He lettered in baseball at Stadium High School in 1950 and 1951.

He enlisted in the Marines in 1952 and served in the Korean War. He was a member of the 9th Marine baseball team of the Far East League while he was stationed in Japan, between 1953-1954.

After discharge, he played baseball in the Tacoma City League for two years. He also officiated football and baseball up to the college level. His other recreational interests were basketball, football, golf, and slow pitch.

Some of Earl’s proud achievements include being the president of the Tacoma Sports Recreation Federation, coaching the City High School All Stars in the City vs. County All Star Baseball Classic, seeing Jackie Robinson play in 1947, hiking into the Grand Canyon in 2002, and teaching Tai Chi for 20 years (until this year)!

Meet our Exercise Members of the Month, Larry and Sue Folger! Larry and Sue started out as patients at Westgate over 20 years ago, and now they come and work out as exercise members 3x/week! Larry and Sue have been married for 65 years, and have 4 daughters and 1 son. Larry served in the US Army and National Guard for 32 years. He also toured with Raymond Burr’s USO Show for 6 months in 1956! Larry and Sue have spent 30 years traveling in their RV with friends, covering the USA, Canada, and Mexico. They have also enjoyed cruising with their family, and have gone on 14 cruises! Their tips/secrets to staying happy and healthy is to “keep moving”! What they have to say about Westgate: “The staff is always there for you. Very knowledgeable and always ready to help you. The [exercise] members are always friendly.” Thank you Larry and Sue for being part of our Westgate family all these years!

Piriformis Syndrome, Part 1: Let’s talk about the Piriformis muscle and Piriformis Syndrome. Your Piriformis is located deep to your gluteal muscles bilaterally and runs from the side of your sacrum to your greater trochanter (k**b on top of your femur/thigh bone). Its primary actions are hip external rotation and abduction. However, it can switch to an internal rotator due to the change in line of pull when the hip comes into a flexed position. 🤯 This muscle also lies on top of your Sciatic nerve, and if tight or if your nerve actually goes through the muscle, this can lead to pain in your buttock and/or down your leg due to compression of the Sciatic nerve. It may cause symptoms of aching, burning, numbness, pain, tingling, or shooting, and may be exacerbated by prolonged sitting, walking, running, or climbing stairs.
