In part one of a three-part series of Black History Month features, the University of Washington School of Nursing recognizes Black nurses whose contributions helped shape the profession and strengthen the UW community. Their work reflects a long history of leadership, advocacy, mentorship, and commitment to equitable care that continues to inform nursing education and practice today.

Learn how they advanced the profession while breaking down barriers, and find local Black History Month events happening this month.

Title: A Necessary Integration: Engaging Students with Nursing History Grounds Their Understanding of Nursing Ethics

Presenter: Marsha D. Fowler, PhD, MDiv, MS, RN, FAAN, FRSA

Register here: https://aahn.memberclicks.net/teaching-nursing-history-2-25-26

Description: During this webinar, you will explore the inseparability of nursing ethics and nursing history in nursing education curricula. You will examine how engaging students with nursing history enhances students’ understanding of one of six structural relationships in nursing ethics, the ethical relationship between the nurse/nursing profession and society, and the role of the ANA Code of Ethics. You will receive 1) module/lesson topic suggestions that address both nursing history and nursing ethics; 2) learning resources to include primary as well as key secondary historical sources that have informed and shaped nursing ethics over the past century; and 3) sample learning activities to simultaneously engage students with nursing history and ethics. The nursing history and ethics content shared within this webinar aligns with “Domain 9: Professionalism” of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Essentials.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the webinar, the participants will be able to:

-Discuss the inseparability of nursing ethics and nursing history in nursing education curricula.
-Summarize the historical foundation of the structural ethical relationship between the nurse/nursing profession and society.
-Select a nursing history learning activity to integrate into an existing course to enhance students’ understanding of nursing ethics.
Cost: $30 Members; $55 Non-members

Participants will earn two nursing contact hours.

Calling all high school students interested in pursuing a career in nursing! Multicare Academy for Students in Healthcare is providing information sessions about their 2026 M.A.S.H. camp.

Are you a high school student interested in a future in health care?

The MultiCare Academy for Students in Healthcare (M.A.S.H. Camp) is a free, multi-day summer program that introduces students to a wide range of health care careers. Participants gain hands-on exposure to real hospital settings and learn directly from experienced health care professionals.

MultiCare invites students and their families to attend upcoming M.A.S.H. Camp informational sessions. These sessions cover the health care careers students will explore, what to expect during camp, eligibility requirements, and how to apply.

This year, M.A.S.H. Camps will be offered in the Puget Sound region, Spokane, and Yakima. Applications are now open and close March 9, 2026. Learn more about M.A.S.H. Camp and register for an informational session: https://multica.re/4ae4c8D
