Red light therapy (RLT) is gaining momentum as an emerging skin treatment with promising results. Talking about it, Dr Batul Patel, celebrity dermatologist and founder of The Bombay Skin Clinic said that this treatment uses low-wavelength red light to improve the appearance of the skin. โ€œIt has been used to reduce wrinkles, scars, redness, acne, and other medical conditions,โ€ she told indianexpress.com, adding that the low-wavelength red light produces a biochemical effect in cells to make more energy, which in turn helps cells work more efficiently to rejuvenate and repair the damage.

*Improves skin complexion and builds collagen to reduce wrinkles
*Helps cure acne
*Improves hair growth in people with androgenetic alopecia
*Helps with sun damage
*Reduces psoriasis lesions
*Prevents recurrent cold sores of Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections
*Helps diminish scars
*It is suggested as an alternative treatment option for patients with vitiligo
*Reduces hypertrophic scars and keloids

According to Dr Patel, it is different from other laser and intense pulsed light (IPL) therapies as it doesnโ€™t cause damage to the skin surface. โ€œLaser and pulsed light therapies work by causing controlled damage to the outer layer of the skin, which then induces tissue repair. RLT, on the other hand, bypasses this harsh step by directly stimulating regeneration of the skin,โ€ she said, explaining that the light emitted by RLT pe*****tes roughly 5 millimeters below the skinโ€™s surface.

How often should one do red light therapy?

To see significant benefits, a series of in-office treatments are typically needed. A treatment may be needed each week for about a month. Then maintenance treatments may be needed every month or every few months. Some at-home devices may also require a substantial time commitment. One might need to use the device twice a day for 30 to 60 minutes for four to five weeks. Other devices take just a few minutes a day.

What are the risks associated with red light therapy?

The risks linked with RLT are rare, however it may cause:

*Increased inflammation
*Rash
*Redness
*Pain

Who should avoid the therapy?

*People taking certain medications that increase their sensitivity to sunlight, such as isotretinoin and lithium.
*Those with a history of certain conditions, including skin cancer and inherited eye diseases.

What precautions should one take before and after the therapy?

Before the therapy: In general, the use of salicylic acids, BHAs, and retinols is encouraged in the days leading up to your RLT treatment. These ingredients can help to clear clogged pores, keep skin moisturised, and help in healthy cell growth. These can all maximise the results of the treatment. Itโ€™s best not to introduce any new products to your skin right before your appointment, as there is always a risk of adverse reaction to a product youโ€™ve never used before.

Products to avoid: One of the most important things to avoid leading up to your RLT appointment is the use of sunscreen. Thatโ€™s because sunscreens can actually block the infrared light waves that are used during a session. This can inhibit your results, so be sure to avoid applying sunscreen immediately before your scheduled appointment.

Other tips to prepare: Another step you can take to prepare your skin for RLT is to use a face massager or face roller in the hour or so leading up to your appointment. These rollers can stimulate blood circulation to the treatment area, which can maximise the effectiveness of your RLT session.

After the therapy: There isnโ€™t a recovery time for the therapy. Besides being careful about sun exposure in the 48 hours after treatment, you can return to your normal routine.

Most of us will experience some form of back pain in our lives.

Often it can come from a strain or injury and with time the pain tends to ease. But back pain can also be caused by bad posture, for example, sitting slouched at your desk all day (something most of us have been guilty of!).

If you donโ€™t correct your posture thereโ€™s a risk youโ€™ll develop long-term chronic problems thatโ€™ll be harder to fix. Prevention is always better than cure.

Thankfully there are a number of handy gadgets on the market to give you a helping hand, with these posture correctors catching our eye.

Created with the help of physiotherapists and osteopaths (and tried and tested by the Metro crew, too), the Percko correctors use elasticated tensor technology to keep your posture in a healthy position.

This means it subtly reminds you of your body position when your muscles are straining, which can happen subconsciously when youโ€™re cleaning, lifting, doing odd jobs around the house or, you know, just sitting at a desk.

Over time your body should relearn to regularly mobilise itself without you consciously having to think about it.

The correctors, which come in three styles, are registered medical devices after being heavily researched, tested by experts, and validated by scientific literature.

Theyโ€™ve had a load of positive reviews online, with many claiming their back pain has gone since they started using them.

One person on Trust Pilot wrote: โ€˜Percko basically saved my life. After a triple hernia, their Lyne Up relieved a huge part of my pain where nothing else had helped me.โ€™

Another said: โ€˜Great support for your back, I wear it on all my working days or sport days and my back feels so much better!โ€™

One of our team, Mel, tried out the Lyne UP, the companyโ€™s bestselling vest, and was impressed by the results.

In her review, she described the vest as โ€˜a cross between a chesty singlet and massage tape, with two straps of elastic running over the shoulders and criss-crossing over the back to then come back around to the front to be fastened with clipsโ€™.

Wearing the jacket โ€˜felt secure enough that I could sense my shoulders were pulling backwards and my body was being encouraged to sit up straight, but not so restrictive that it was distracting or painful.โ€™

And after just three days of use, her back pain was drastically diminished.

Your feet take a pounding as a runner. Even with the most technologically advanced midsole cushioning available to humankind, injuries are extremely common as each foot strike has been shown to produce a force equal to between three and seven times your bodyweight.

That all equates to a huge amount of pressure, and inevitably injuries do occur โ€“ something that no runner wants. Here, Pete Talbot, physiotherapist for P3RFORM, runs through the three most common foot injuries from running, and how to treat them if you're unfortunate enough to pick one up.

1.Plantar fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of foot pain in runners and often presents as a sharp/stabbing pain in the heel. Often the foot pain is worse first thing in the morning, and during and after running.

The plantar fascia is a thick ligament that lies just beneath the skin and runs along the bottom of your foot from the calcaneus (heel bone) to the base of each toe. Plantar fasciitis occurs when too much pressure and stretching damages the ligament and it becomes inflamed or even tears.

Causes: It can be high-arched feet, wearing running shoes that do not support your foot adequately or sudden changes in training load or starting new activities.

Prevent it: Follow a structured training programme with no sudden spikes in training load and perform strengthening exercises alongside your running. Also, wearing the correct footwear is key not just for your training but also if you spend a large part of your day on your feet.

Treat it: Initially, rest and ice to help with pain management and use a tennis ball or frozen water in a bottle to massage the sole of your foot. Anti-inflammatories can also be taken, but it's best to get advice from a pharmacist or your GP prior to taking them.

2. Stress fracture
Stress fractures are small breaks in the bone that cause sharp, localised pain, tenderness, swelling, walking/running differently to avoid putting pressure on the injured area and bruising. Any bone can be susceptible to a stress fracture, but the metatarsals are the most common.

Causes: Stress fractures occur as a result of repetitive overuse and, similar to plantar fasciitis, they can result from a sudden increase in work/training load, doing too much running on hard surfaces or wearing footwear that is not correct for your foot type or biomechanics.

Prevent it: If you experience any pain that you suspect to be a stress fracture it is important you stop impact activities and get a medical diagnosis to confirm the specific nature of the injury. This is best done by a sports medicine physician.

Treat it: Unfortunately, the treatment for stress fractures is rest with no impact activities and you may even need a period of six to eight weeks in an immobilisation boot, but this will be discussed once you have an accurate diagnosis.

3. Tendinopathy

Tendons are responsible for transmitting forces from muscle to bone. Tendinopathy is a clinical syndrome, often but not always implying overuse tendon injuries, characterised by a combination of pain, diffused or localised swelling and impaired performance.

There are a few common locations around the foot where tendinopathies can occur: the lateral side of the ankle is peroneal tendinopathy, and around the heel is achilles tendinopathy. Symptoms are described as a gradual onset of pain during running which can become more frequent and start to be a problem in everyday activities. The tendon itself can be painful to touch and symptoms are often worse in the mornings or after periods of sitting.

Causes: Causes differ depending on the location of the tendinopathy, but they are mainly changes in work/training load or changes in running surface.

Treat it: It is always best to seek medical advice, but treatment will revolve around optimal loading of the affected tendon both isometric and eccentrically. An example of this would be to do calf raises but go very slow on the lowering part of the movement and complete three sets of 15 reps. Itโ€™s best to avoid painful higher-impact activities and ensure your return to activity is gradual.

In more recent years, red-light therapy has become increasingly popular for its weight-loss effects. Studies have shown that LLLT positively affects fat and cellulite reduction and improves blood lipid profile. This non-invasive treatment can achieve body-sculpting results many seek out, and is often favored over other procedures that may pose more risk and require downtime and recovery.

How does red light therapy work for weight loss?
During a red light therapy session, non-thermal irradiance lasers or LED lights expose and pe*****te cells and tissue to low red and near-infrared (NIR) levels. In this process, the lights target the fat in the cells underneath the skin to minimize fat while increasing collagen production. This results in fat reduction, smoother skin, and improved elasticity, effectively reducing cellulite.

Benefits of red light therapy for weight loss
Red light therapy is known for relieving pain, reducing inflammation, boosting immune function, and other healing properties. Still, researchers are finding it also carries several weight loss benefits.

Body shaping
With a wide variety of equipment (and sizes) offered, LLLT makes it easy for those who treat target areas to do so successfully. For example, in a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 67 volunteers aged 18โ€“65 with a BMI between 25 and 30 were treated with a non-invasive laser (or placebo treatment) three times per week for two weeks.

While reduction measurements were initially taken separately (-0.98 in. in the waist, -1.05 in. across the hips, and -0.85 in. and -0.65 in. across the right and left thighs), researchers combined the total inches of circumference measurements from beginning to end of the two-week treatment.

Results showed participants in the treatment group had an overall reduction in total circumference of -3.51 inches compared with the control subjects, which revealed a -0.684 inch reduction. The results suggest low-level laser therapy can effectively reduce overall circumference measurements of specifically treated regions.

Another study focusing solely on the waistline included forty participants who underwent 30-minute treatments twice-weekly for four weeks, totaling eight treatments. At the end of the eight treatments, participants experienced a significant reduction of about one inch in their waist measurements.

While these results occurred without participants needing to make dietary and lifestyle changes, itโ€™s still recommended and will be more effective together than doing either alone.

Reduces belly fat
As red light therapy becomes increasingly popular for weight loss, individuals are turning to it as a solution for excess belly fat (one of the most popular target areas) when other strategies like diet and exercise may not produce the results youโ€™re looking for.

Several studies found when infrared light with a wavelength of 635โ€“680 nm is applied to the subcutaneous fat layer, the wavelengths are converted into cellular energy that boosts circulation and increases the metabolism of fat cells.

In a 2011 double-blind, randomized study published in the Journal of Obesity Surgery, 40 participants experienced a statistically significant reduction in their waist size after two 30-minute red light therapy treatments per week for four weeks. Each treatment resulted in approximately 0.4โ€“0.5 cm loss for a total of 2.15 cm.

Overall, itโ€™s shown that infrared therapy is a safe and effective way to target the waistline for body contouring.

Reduces cellulite
Everyone (including athletes) has cellulite, which is a typical fatty tissue on the body, often causing a dimpled appearance of the skin in areas like the thighs and midsection. As the body ages, collagen production slowly declines. Red light therapy has become one of the most popular alternative therapies for boosting collagen production.

LLLT can diminish the appearance of cellulite and firm the skin in these areas. It has been shown to promote the growth of fibroblasts (connective tissue cells that produce collagen fibers) and increase collagen production. With the increase in collagen, blood flow also increases, breaking up the cells that cause cellulite.

In addition to the growth of fibroblasts, this also stimulates the production of elastin fibers, helping to smooth and firm skin.

Causes fat cells to โ€œleakโ€
During red light therapy treatment, when the light pe*****tes through the skin, it creates pores in your fat cells, liquefying the fatty acids within the cells, causing them to โ€œleak.โ€ When this occurs, the cells shrink, and the body metabolizes and naturally eliminates fat through waste.

According to a study, just four minutes of exposure to red light therapy at 635 nm was found to cause 80% of lipids to be released from fat cells. By six minutes, 99 % of the fat was removed from the adipocyte, reducing volume and causing a noticeable measurable fat loss.

Is red light therapy risky?
Red light therapy is a completely natural treatment using red and near-infrared wavelengths on the skin-unharmful, unlike UV light from the sun or in tanning beds. While generally safe, it's noted that too much exposure could potentially cause tissue or cell damage, but the chance is very minimal. Red light therapy has even been shown to benefit pregnant women, but before you try it, check with your doctor.

Whether you choose to partake in red light therapy through a professional or a DIY device in the comfort of your own home, the treatment will provide positive benefits throughout your body. Not only for weight loss, but for mental and other physical conditions, too. Just remember that, like other elective treatments and medical devices, following a healthy diet and exercise regimen alongside your red light therapy sessions is recommended to see the best results.

Can I use red light therapy at home?
Red light therapy is widely available at gyms, tanning salons, wellness centers, or spas and in specialty offices such as a dermatologist's office. You can also purchase at-home red light therapy devices, but some may not work as well as professional equipment, and those that do can cost you a few thousand dollars.

Always check with your primary physician if you have any concerns or questions before starting a new treatment. If it's your first time doing red light therapy, it can be helpful to see a professional specializing in red light therapy treatment.

Good posture is about more than standing up straight so you can look your best. It is an important part of your long-term health. Making sure that you hold your body the right way, whether you are moving or still, can prevent pain, injuries, and other health problems.

What is posture?
Posture is how you hold your body. There are two types:

Dynamic posture is how you hold yourself when you are moving, like when you are walking, running, or bending over to pick up something.
Static posture is how you hold yourself when you are not moving, like when you are sitting, standing, or sleeping.
It is important to make sure that you have good dynamic and static posture.

The key to good posture is the position of your spine. Your spine has three natural curves - at your neck, mid back, and low back. Correct posture should maintain these curves, but not increase them. Your head should be above your shoulders, and the top of your shoulder should be over the hips.

How can posture affect my health?
Poor posture can be bad for your health. Slouching or slumping over can:

Misalign your musculoskeletal system
Wear away at your spine, making it more fragile and prone to injury
Cause neck, shoulder, and back pain
Decrease your flexibility
Affect how well your joints move
Affect your balance and increase your risk of falling
Make it harder to digest your food
Make it harder to breathe
How can I improve my posture in general?
Be mindful of your posture during everyday activities, like watching television, washing dishes, or walking
Stay active. Any kind of exercise may help improve your posture, but certain types of exercises can be especially helpful. They include yoga, tai chi, and other classes that focuses on body awareness. It is also a good idea to do exercises that strengthen your core (muscles around your back, abdomen, and pelvis).
Maintain a healthy weight. Extra weight can weaken your abdominal muscles, cause problems for your pelvis and spine, and contribute to low back pain. All of these can hurt your posture.
Wear comfortable, low-heeled shoes. High heels, for example, can throw off your balance and force you to walk differently. This puts more stress on your muscles and harms your posture.
Make sure work surfaces are at a comfortable height for you, whether you're sitting in front of a computer, making dinner, or eating a meal.
How can I improve my posture when sitting?
Many Americans spend a lot of their time sitting - either at work, at school, or at home. It is important to sit properly, and to take frequent breaks:

Switch sitting positions often
Take brief walks around your office or home
Gently stretch your muscles every so often to help relieve muscle tension
Don't cross your legs; keep your feet on the floor, with your ankles in front of your knees
Make sure that your feet touch the floor, or if that's not possible, use a footrest
Relax your shoulders; they should not be rounded or pulled backwards
Keep your elbows in close to your body. They should be bent between 90 and 120 degrees.
Make sure that your back is fully supported. Use a back pillow or other back support if your chair does not have a backrest that can support your lower back's curve.
Make sure that your thighs and hips are supported. You should have a well-padded seat, and your thighs and hips should be parallel to the floor.
How can I improve my posture when standing?
Stand up straight and tall
Keep your shoulders back
Pull your stomach in
Put your weight mostly on the balls of your feet
Keep your head level
Let your arms hang down naturally at your sides
Keep your feet about shoulder-width apart

With practice, you can improve your posture; you will look and feel better.

Foot pain is a common complaint and can be caused by a variety of conditions. Some of the most common causes of foot pain are plantar fasciitis, posterior tibial tendonitis, tarsal tunnel syndrome, bunions, and hammertoe. Plantar fasciitis results from the irritation of a thick band of tissue that runs across the bottom of the foot, and it is treated with physical therapy that includes stretching, strengthening, and balance exercises. Posterior tibial tendonitis occurs when the posterior tibialis tendon is irritated and can be treated with exercises for flexibility, strength, and balance, as well as with orthotics. Tarsal tunnel syndrome is caused by the compression of the main nerve that goes to the foot and can be treated with anti-inflammatory drugs, orthotics, changes in footwear, and, in severe cases, with surgery. Bunions and hammertoe are both caused by misaligned joints, and treatment may involve non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, corticosteroid injections, bunion pads, splints, orthotics, and physical therapy exercises to strengthen the muscles and improve joint alignment. Surgery may be an option in severe cases. Prevention of these conditions includes wearing properly fitting shoes, avoiding high heels, and keeping the feet strong through exercise.

A new study has shown that the best medication for acute lower back pain is a combination of an NSAID and a prescription muscle relaxer. Researchers looked at aspirin, acetaminophen and NSAIDs, and found that taking acetaminophen alone did not significantly reduce pain. However, combining an NSAID with acetaminophen was associated with a greater improvement than taking an NSAID alone. Muscle relaxers are effective in reducing pain and disability by the end of one week, however, they donโ€™t work in quite the way people might think as they work centrally in the brain to make people sleepy and relax the body. The study only applies to lower back pain that isnโ€™t ongoing and chronic. Before any such intervention is recommended, a physician should rule out any possible specific cause of pain that may require specific actions or diagnostics, for example, a history of cancer or recent trauma. It's estimated that 4 out of 5 people will experience low back pain in their lives, and exercise is highly recommended.

Today, beauty treatments are very popular, especially those that enhance skin radiance and reduce the signs of ageing. One such treatment is red light therapy. It is a bio-stimulator treatment that uses low-wavelength red light that has been shown to boost the skinโ€™s ability to produce collagen, resulting in the formation of new cells that contribute to a more youthful appearance. It is quickly emerging as the treatment of choice for people seeking to obtain a firmer, smoother skin texture along with glowing skin due to its capacity to reduce wrinkles and other signs of ageing. Read on to learn more about this treatment.

Benefits of red light therapy
Red light therapy has been found to have numerous benefits for the skin. This innovative treatment stimulates the growth and reproduction of fibroblast cells, resulting in the production of collagen and elastin that help to restore the skinโ€™s softness, suppleness, and youthful appearance. In addition to reducing the appearance of age spots, wrinkles, and fine lines, red light therapy can also be effective in treating various skin diseases such as eczema, rosacea and psoriasis.

It aids in the reduction of scars and acne by lowering inflammation and promoting tissue regeneration and helping to repair sun-damaged skin. When red light therapy reaches the deepest layer of the skin, the dermis, it boosts cell activity and stimulates blood flow, facilitating the skinโ€™s detoxification process and promoting collagen production. This leads to a brighter, more youthful-looking complexion with a healthy glow.

Additionally, red light therapy specifically targets the sebaceous glands, which are responsible for producing sebum, an oil that can clog pores and lead to acne. By reducing inflammation within these glands, red light therapy can effectively treat acne. This treatment utilizes low-wavelength red light to improve the appearance of the skin, fading scars, redness, wrinkles, and acne.

Is there any risk of red light therapy?
Red LED light therapy is a non-invasive and pain-free skin care treatment that has gained popularity in recent years. Although some people have reported experiencing temporary redness and swelling after the treatment, it is not known to cause any permanent damage to the skin.

It is worth noting that the intensity of the treatment can vary between at-home LED skin care devices and those used in clinics. The devices used in clinics are generally more powerful than at-home devices, which may result in a higher risk of side effects. Therefore, there is a lesser risk associated with using at-home LED skincare devices. It is always recommended to consult with a licensed professional before starting any new skincare treatment to ensure its safety and effectiveness.

Are there similar treatment options?

What are some tips for improving posture?

1. Improving posture is essential for maintaining good health and reducing the risk of pain and injury. Here are some tips for improving posture:

2. Keep your shoulders back and down: This will help to prevent your shoulders from hunching forward, which can cause strain on your neck and upper back muscles.

3. Keep your head level: Avoid tilting your head forward or backward, as this can strain your neck and shoulder muscles. Try to keep your head in a neutral position, with your ears aligned with your shoulders.

4. Keep your core engaged: Your core muscles help to support your spine, so it's important to keep them engaged. Try to draw your belly button towards your spine and hold for a few seconds, then release.

5. Sit up straight: When sitting, keep your back straight and your feet flat on the floor. Avoid crossing your legs, as this can cause strain on your hips and lower back.

6. Take breaks: If you sit for long periods, take regular breaks to stand up and stretch. This can help to reduce the risk of stiffness and pain.

7. Stretch regularly: Stretching can help to loosen tight muscles and improve flexibility. Try to stretch for a few minutes each day, focusing on the muscles in your neck, shoulders, and back.

8. Consider posture correction devices: There are various devices, such as braces or posture correctors, that can help to improve posture. However, it's important to use them correctly and only with guidance from a healthcare professional.

By practicing good posture habits, you can improve your overall health and reduce the risk of pain and injury.

A 56-year-old woman who had previously recovered from colon cancer and severe asthma began experiencing excruciating leg pain caused by a pinched or irritated nerve. Despite seeing a doctor and a chiropractor, she found no relief. She turned to her Facebook friends for suggestions and was advised to see a physical therapist, who gave her exercises to do. However, the pain persisted, so she saw a neurologist, who noticed that she had weakness in her left foot and an inability to feel pain on the top of her left foot. The neurologist sent her for blood tests, which suggested some kind of autoimmune disease, so she was referred to a rheumatologist. The rheumatologist considered Sjogrenโ€™s syndrome and lupus as possible diagnoses, but she would need to look for other symptoms to narrow the field.

Red light therapy (RLT) involves exposing the skin to safe wavelengths of light to address a number of skin concerns, such as aging signs, stretch marks, scars, hyperpigmentation, and acne. The low wavelength red light produces a biochemical effect in cells to make more energy, which helps cells work more efficiently to rejuvenate and repair damage. RLT induces skin regeneration without causing any thermal damage or downtime, unlike some other light therapies. Red light can pe*****te up to five millimeters in the skin, making it effective without being invasive. In-office sessions usually take about 20 to 30 minutes, and weekly treatments for about a month are recommended to address a specific skin concern, after which a monthly cadence is ideal for maintenance. Red light can be combined with other colors, such as yellow and blue, for more anti-inflammatory or anti-bacterial benefits. Dr. Dennis Grossโ€™ LED light therapy mask and the NuFace Trinity with red light therapy attachment are two recommended at-home RLT products. Potential benefits of RLT include reducing inflammation, treating acne, boosting production of antioxidants, and reducing oxidative stress.
