What is a FALSE POSITIVE?
https://www.cancer.gov/news-events/cancer-currents-blog/2024/mammogram-false-positives-affect-future-screening

False positives in breast cancer screening are common, with over 50% of women experiencing at least one false-positive recall (requiring more tests) over 10 years of annual mammograms, and 7-12% getting a false-positive biopsy recommendation, meaning no cancer is found after further investigation. Rates are higher for younger women (40-49) and decrease with prior mammograms for comparison, but false positives add stress, cost, and can lead to unnecessary invasive procedures like biopsies, though newer technologies like 3D mammography aim to improve accuracy.
Key Statistics & Factors
Cumulative Risk: After 10 years of annual screening, over half of women (50-60%) will have at least one false-positive result.
Age: Younger women (40-49) have higher false-positive rates (around 10-12%).
Biopsy Recommendation: About 7% to 12% of women may receive a false-positive that leads to a biopsy.
Technology: 3D mammography (tomosynthesis) may reduce false positives compared to 2D mammograms.
Comparison: Having previous mammograms for comparison helps reduce false positives.
What Happens After a False Positive?
Recall: You're called back for additional imaging (diagnostic mammogram, ultrasound).
Biopsy: If suspicious areas remain, a biopsy (removing tissue for testing) might be recommended, which is more invasive.
Stress & Cost: These follow-up tests are stressful, time-consuming, costly, and can be invasive.

Some women who receive a false-positive result on a mammogram may not come back for routine breast cancer screening in the future, a new study has found.

Clinical Impact & Future:
Better Detection in Dense Breasts: Thermography shows promise in screening women with dense breasts, where mammograms are less effective.

Ancillary Tool: It's being re-evaluated as a complementary, radiation-free tool alongside mammography, rather than a replacement, providing a functional assessment of tissue.

Focus on Standardization: Researchers are working on standardizing protocols and datasets to make thermography more widely accepted in radiology.

In essence, modern breast thermography leverages cutting-edge tech to create a more precise, less subjective screening tool, though challenges remain in standardization and integration with mainstream radiology.

Thermography

Thermography uses an infrared camera to detect heat emissions from the targeted body region. Digital infrared thermal imaging is the thermography used to diagnose breast cancer. This method shows high accuracy and is a cost-effective form of diagnosis. The concept behind this test is that as cancer cells multiply, they need more oxygen-rich blood for growth. As there is an increase in blood flow to the tumor, the temperature around the tumor also increases. Malignant cells discharge nitric oxide into the bloodstream and cause impairment in the microcirculation [22]. This released nitric oxide, along with the active growth of the cancerous cells, increases blood circulation and temperature in that particular region. Therefore, evaluating these differences in temperature leads to the detection of the malignant region in the breast [23].

Globally, breast cancer is the most frequently occurring cancer in women and is the reason for more disability-adjusted life years lost than any other type of cancer. Hence, early screening plays a vital role in reducing breast cancer mortality. ...

We love fielding questions from our clients. One of them that is asked often is, ‘if breast thermography is so great, why isn’t it more readily available, and why isn’t it widely used?’ At ThermApproach, we asked the same question. The answer is somewhat political, but we believe this will h...
