“Trauma is not what happens to you. It is what happens inside you as a result of what happened to you.” – Gabor Maté
Many of us go through life on autopilot, unaware of how deeply our past experiences have shaped us. We tell ourselves, “I had everything I needed—food, clothes, a roof over my head. My childhood was fine.” But emotional and mental neglect are real, even if they’re invisible.
Maybe you were never asked how you felt. Maybe you were taught that being yourself wasn’t enough—that in order to be loved, accepted, or safe, you had to adjust, shrink, or perform. That silent message may have come from parents who didn’t even realize the weight of their words or actions. And so, without knowing it, people-pleasing and perfectionism became your survival tools.
Healing begins when you start telling your story with honesty. When you recognize that your feelings are valid. When you give yourself permission to unlearn and become. 💛
