Calling all parents of children with autism. Our occupational therapist, Sharlycia, is currently in her post-professional doctoral program. Her capstone project focuses on creating a sleep hygiene toolkit to support sleep participation among autistic children and reduce parents’ and caregivers’ stress. We kindly ask you to complete this anonymous questionnaire, which takes about 5-10 minutes, to assist with this important research. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please contact Sharlycia at S.Ward3@usa.edu. Thank you all for your support! Here is the link for the survey:

Today is FSU's Great Give! For this year’s FSU's Great Give campaign, the FSU’s School of Communication Science and Disorders is raising money to support their Intensive Comprehensive Aphasia Program (ICAP). Aphasia, a communication disorder affecting a person’s ability to talk, read, and write, is caused by brain injury or disease, with stroke being the most common cause. The FSU ICAP will provide an annual 4-6 week dedicated program for stroke survivors and their family members to engage in stroke and aphasia education sessions, as well as individual and group communication therapy sessions with our speech-language pathology students and faculty. This program will be interdisciplinary and also include opportunities for stroke survivors to work with students, faculty, and professionals in related fields, such as social work, animal therapy, music therapy, yoga therapy, and art therapy. Funds from the FSU's Great Give will support the second annual FSU ICAP helping to shape an ongoing person-centered, wholistic stroke and aphasia rehabilitation program to better meet the needs of stroke and brain injury survivors in our community. The mission of FSU’s School of Communication Science and Disorders is close to our hearts and we've made a donation to support their work. If this mission also speaks to you, please consider showing your support for this incredible cause. Thank you!

🍀 This is not just a craft. This is skill-building. 🍀
Today Ms. Shar is using droppers and green water to decorate shamrocks and this activity is doing heavy developmental work!
While your child is engaged and having fun, they’re building:
💚 The small hand muscles needed for strong, controlled handwriting💚 Precision and graded finger control💚 Coordination between both hands (one stabilizes, one works)💚 Visual-motor integration (eyes + hands working together)💚 Motor planning and endurance
There’s even intentional sensory input built in including:
✨ Proprioceptive feedback from squeezing✨ Tactile exploration in a controlled way✨ Visual focus and tracking✨ Repetitive movement that supports regulation
💚 This is how we build fine motor strength and sensory regulation, one squeeze at a time! 💚

Our Emotional Regulation group is designed to help children understand, express, and manage big emotions in a safe, supportive environment. Through a variety of play, movement, and sensory-based activities, children learn how to calm, organize, and regulate themselves when experiencing different emotions.
This group focuses on building emotional awareness, impulse control, frustration tolerance, and coping skills using Occupational therapy approaches. LED by certified Occupational Therapy Assistant, Suzannah Walsh, our Emotional Regulation group is appropriate for children who experience big emotional reactions, difficulty calming their bodies, challenges with transitions, or emotional overwhelm that impacts daily participation at home or school. This group is planned for Wednesday afternoons between 3:30-4:00, is 30 minutes in length and we will build groups to match age ranges. Cost is $38 per week. Reach out to us at (850)294-3249 to be added to the group, and please pass the word to other families who may benefit!

☃️It’s TIME!!!☃️.
This cold weather has us thinking about the holidays so we gave some Play-Doh a festive makeover by adding sparkly textures and fun embellishments. ✨
This activity isn’t just playful — it helps kids develop tactile discrimination, strengthen fine-motor coordination, and practice sensory regulation in a fun, low-pressure way. 🌈
Building skills through holiday magic! ✨

What is Therapeutic Listening®? 🎧
Therapeutic Listening is a sound-based treatment approach that uses specially modified music to support sensory processing, attention, communication, and regulation. Because listening involves the whole brain and body, this approach helps children better organize how they take in and respond to the world around them.
During Therapeutic Listening, children use headphones to listen to carefully engineered music that stimulates specific parts of the nervous system. This helps improve balance, coordination, emotional regulation, and overall focus. It’s often used alongside occupational therapy activities to enhance outcomes and support lasting developmental change.
At Capital Speech and Occupational Therapy, Therapeutic Listening is integrated into your child’s individualized therapy session to help your child build confidence, improve daily function, and connect more fully with others and their environment. 💙 If you think your child might benefit from Therapeutic Listening, contact us! Our Story

Our mission at Capital Speech & Language Therapy Services is to provide excellent Speech, Language, and Occupational Evaluation and Treatment for children in natural learning environments.

Our services are offered in homes, schools, and child-care facilities. These environments are not only the most comfortable for our clients, but are also convenient for parents, caregivers, and clients.

We're different from other service providers because we immerse ourselves into your child's life. We go to their school or home where a system of support is already in place. This creates an easy way to advocate for their needs and become part of the child's environment. Working as a team, we provide encouragement, ongoing support, and attainable solutions that are functional and relate to the real issues your child is facing.
