In honor of American Heart Month, we’re proud to spotlight Lucinda J. Graven, a family nurse practitioner and Associate Professor in the FSU College of Nursing.

Graven's innovative research advances heart failure care by improving symptom management and support for patients and their caregivers. Her work developing and testing cognitive-behavioral interventions helps families navigate complex health challenges and promotes better heart health at home.

Most recently, Graven was the recipient of the 2025 Heart Failure Society of America Nursing Research Leadership Award.

Continuing our recognition of American Heart Month, we are proud to feature Michelle Parvatiyar, Associate Professor in FSU Anne's College.

Her research focuses on the complex role of the extracellular matrix (ECM) and contractile proteins in the heart. She examines how the heart’s foundation changes during disease, as well as how these specific proteins responsible for every heartbeat begin to fail.

By identifying what causes cardiac dysfunction, her research enables therapeutic interventions to repair the heart, potentially eliminating the need for full heart transplants. Parvatiyar's work allows us to move beyond simply managing the symptoms of heart failure and instead target the root cause of the damage to protect and restore the heart.
