PARENTS - DID YOU KNOW? 📣
Under federal special education law, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), IEP teams must make decisions about your child’s education based on their NEEDS.
That means decisions CANNOT be based on:
❌ Your child’s disability label
❌ The school’s budget
❌ Staff availability
❌ Whether a program already exists
Decisions MUST be based on:
🌟 Your child’s individual needs
🌟 The supports and services required for your child to make meaningful progress
- In the general education curriculum (goals all children are expected to achieve)
- On their IEP goals
If families hear:
• “We don’t have that here.”
• “We don’t have staff for that.”
• “We can’t do that for this type of disability.”
Families may want to ask for:
• Reasons
• Other options
• An IEP facilitated by a non-biased party
• Mediation
Remember, all decisions must be put in writing. ✍️ Your rights and your child’s rights don’t change based on a school’s limitations.
Strong, positive outcomes are most likely when decisions are made by a team, not by an individual. Parents - You are an important part of the team! 🤝
Open communication, collaboration, and shared problem-solving are key. Please work with your school team to ensure your child’s needs are clearly identified and addressed through appropriate supports and services, and that everyone is on the same page with shared goals focused on your child’s growth and success. 🙌
By sharing perspectives, honoring each other’s roles, and working toward shared goals, every child has the opportunity to grow, succeed, and feel supported! 🌟💜
