Haven’t eaten since dinner? Then you've been fasting all night. Your metabolism has significantly slowed down and your blood sugar levels have plummeted. Now it’s time to break your fast.

It doesn’t have to be right when you wake up, but this is the most important meal of the day in my opinion. By breaking your fast (breakfast) you are kick-starting your metabolism, restoring your blood sugar, effectively improving your appetite control, and therefore improving your chances of consistently eating proper portions of food.

I always tell my clients if they don’t typically eat breakfast, it's best to reprogram their body to do so slowly, by introducing something small like an apple, piece of toast, etc., and working their way up to a balanced breakfast. Something is better than nothing.

Oxidative stress causes cellular damage accelerates the aging process and contributes to disease. It can be a problem.

Antioxidants are rich in many foods we eat like berries, beans, kale, artichokes, dark chocolate, etc., and spices and herbs like cinnamon, cloves, oregano, and peppermint, can help fight many diseases, including stroke.

Plant foods contain 64 times more antioxidants than foods sourced from animals. They also prevent blood clots, lower your blood pressure and inflammation.

Get your antioxidants from food sources (more bioavailable), stop with all your supplements, and eat whole foods.

Quinoa, if you haven’t tried it already, please do! It is packed with protein, vitamins and minerals, and fiber (which is sorely lacking in the American Diet).

Yes, it has lots of nutrients like folate, Vitamin E, magnesium, iron, and zinc but it also will have a major effect on lipid panelS as well, lowering triglyceride levels.

Give it a try, cook 1 cup of quinoa in 2 cups of water, bring it to a boil and then reduce to a simmer until the water is absorbed and the quinoa is fluffy. Serve it as a side dish with some salt or look up some creative recipes online to start slowly introducing this to your diet.

As a Registered Dietitian, I worked in healthcare for years and saw many good people spending most of their retirement in and out of hospitals. It brought me deep sadness because I knew MOST of their problems lay with nutrition.

While medication and even many supplements can solve your immediate problems, it's rarely a solution, just an ongoing cycle of treatment.

Now I know outcomes with nutrition aren't instantaneous but practicing proper nutrition and improving it over time can save your life, not just from dying early, but improving your overall quality of life.

No matter where YOU are with your health, you can always do something about it. Start making daily changes that are realistic and doable. If you struggle with this, then:

Stop wasting time, ask for help, and live your BEST life. Otherwise, what's the point?

If you are trying to lose weight, use carbohydrates to your advantage.

Ingesting the proper balance of foods containing carbohydrates can fuel your body for exercise, improve your energy and focus, boost vitamin and mineral intake, and beyond.

Generally speaking, it's bad for our health to deprive our bodies of this essential macronutrient but beyond that, you are hurting your weight loss goals too.

Hope that helps you view carbohydrates differently!

I'll say it again, carbohydrates are essential to our diet.

Yes, you can lose weight by eating foods with carbs.

Foods containing carbohydrates have many vitamins and minerals, such as all fruits and vegetables, some dairy products, legumes (beans, lentils, peas), and whole grains.

Yes, eat a lot of these foods

Other foods containing carbohydrates refined grain and processed products, cookies, candies, cakes, etc.

You can still have these, they're too delicious to pass up, but...

Eat them less often.

Required amounts of carbohydrates needed by a person vary depending on your needs, activity level, genetics, goals, age, and so on, but most of us, even if we are trying to lose weight, require 45% to 65% carbohydrates of our total daily calories.

When it comes to weight loss. The biggest mistake I see people making is they try and make too many changes at once. Their goal of transforming quickly is their downfall.

This often means getting on a specific diet or eliminate foods, stop eating the foods they enjoy, begin rigorous exercise programs in what seems like a race to meet their goals.

This desperation attempt either results in complete frustration or unsustained weight loss.

It doesn't have to be this way!

Focus on making changes to your daily habits, that promote your goals. Ask yourself, can I sustain this change? If not, simplify it. Master this habit and build off of it.

If you want to lose weight and keep it off, focus on your daily habits, always.

Carbohydrates are not a food group, but rather a macronutrient present in many of the foods we eat.

1. Types of carbohydrates include starch, sugars, and fiber.

2. Fiber and Starch are complex carbohydrates

3. Sugars are simple carbohydrates

1,2,3. They can be present in high, moderate, or low amounts in various foods.

Many foods with carbohydrates contain high amounts of vitamins and minerals and are essential to our diet.

I get asked by family, friends, colleagues all the time. What should I eat or how do I lose weight? But I always get the sense they are asking a very general question like there is ONE answer.

The truth is, no one diet or lifestyle fits all. Diet, originally coming from the Greek term diaita means "way of life", not some trendy thing to do. The choices you make need to align with your goals, preferences, and basic demands.

I wish there was one answer, a majority of the population wouldn't be struggling if that were the case.

If you have spent a long time trying to find YOUR answer, and are struggling, it is time to prioritize YOU and ask for help.

Let's first talk about protein in general, which is composed of amino acids. A complete protein is made up of all nine essential amino acids, meaning our body requires it. Many animal products like steak or pork have all nine essential amino acids, and plant proteins considered COMPLETE are quinoa and soybeans.

Many plant proteins are missing or have lower amounts of essential amino acids, BUT this is okay because we can combine foods you know?

For instance, beans are low in methionine (an amino acid), a complete protein when combined with rice. Or if you are having bean soup you can combine it with whole-grain rolls to make it a complete protein.

Additionally, you don't need all your essential amino acids in one meal.

The point is, don't stress over protein (composed of amino acids) so much. Eat your plant foods.

There is nothing wrong with having goals, but if you are obsessed with outcomes, your daily habits will fall by the wayside.

I often see people, who are frustrated with their weight loss, become too obsessed with outcomes. If they aren't losing weight or see a physical change they abandon their habits and start experimenting.

These experiments often come from multiple sources; articles on the internet, advice from various nutrition gurus, friends, coworkers. There is NO consistency.

The thing is, it's not your fault. There is too much nutrition and health information out there. It's totally normal to be unsure what to do.

The best thing you can do for yourself is focusing on your daily habits and build off them. I promise you, I've seen it thousands of times, this is the way to better results.
