Pacemaker vs. ICD: what’s the difference? 🤔

A pacemaker keeps your heart beating at the right rhythm, like a steady metronome, and prevents the heart from erroneously slowing down.

An ICD does that, too, but it also delivers a shock if a dangerously fast rhythm like v-tach shows up, acting as your heart’s emergency responder.

Not all pacemakers are created equal.

🩺From traditional models with leads to the latest leadless ‘micro-pacemakers,’ there’s a solution for nearly every heart rhythm. Leadless pacemakers are tiny, self-contained devices implanted directly in the heart muscle—no wires, smaller incisions, and often a quicker recovery.

They’re changing the game in cardiac care, offering patients a less invasive option without sacrificing reliability. 💪

Ever wondered what actually happens during a catheter ablation? 🫀

A thin, flexible tube is guided through your blood vessels to your heart, where targeted energy gently disrupts the faulty electrical signals causing your irregular or abnormal rhythm – without the need for major surgery. It’s precise, minimally invasive, and designed to help your heart beat in harmony again.

Low-level, persistent inflammation can quietly damage blood vessels and increase the risk of heart disease, even in individuals who appear otherwise healthy.

Evidence-based strategies to reduce inflammation:
🏃‍♂️ Move daily – exercise helps regulate your immune system
🥦 Eat anti-inflammatory foods – fresh fruits and veggies, whole grains, healthy fats
🛌 Prioritize quality sleep – your body repairs while you rest
💊 Be mindful of medication overuse – frequent NSAIDs, antibiotics, or antacids may affect gut health; use as directed

Taking care of your heart health doesn’t have to be complicated.

❤️Here are 4 simple habits to keep your heart happy:
1️⃣ Move your body – aim for daily exercise like walking, running, or weight lifting
2️⃣ Eat for your heart – incorporate more leafy greens and fresh produce, less of the processed stuff
3️⃣ Prioritize sleep – your heart loves a good night’s rest
4️⃣ Manage stress – breathe, relax, repeat

It’s the little things that make a big difference. Don’t wait ‘til it's too late to start healthy habits.

Wonder what makes these implantable cardiac devices different from the others? 🤔

Medtronic uses technology – SureScan™ MRI – that allows many of their pacemakers, ICDs, and CRT devices to be safely used during MRI scans

Traditionally, MRI wasn’t an option for people with implanted cardiac devices due to risks from strong magnetic fields. SureScan™ systems are designed to:
Reduce the chance of device interference
Maintain stable pacing during the scan
Keep both the device and the leads safe in the MRI environment

For patients, this means access to essential imaging without compromising heart device safety. It’s amazing to see the innovations that are available to our patients nowadays.

Ever feel like your heart just skipped a beat? 💓

Most of the time, it’s a harmless extra or missed beat called a ‘palpitation.’ Stress, caffeine, or even just fatigue can trigger it, and it’s natural. But if it’s frequent or comes with other symptoms like dizziness or chest pain, it’s time to check in with your doctor.

Tachycardia is a heart that beats too fast. Bradycardia is at the opposite end of the spectrum: a heart that beats too slowly. 🫀

When the heart is not maintaining an even pace, that’s where a pacemaker comes in. It’s a small device that’s placed under the skin, usually just below the collarbone, with thin leads that connect to the heart. It monitors your heartbeat and delivers gentle electrical signals only when needed, keeping your rhythm steady.

A tiny device with a big job. Keep a look out for part 2: leadless pacemakers.

🎄❤️ Holiday Heart Syndrome is REAL and your heart is not here for the chaos.

🍸Big meals, late nights, stressy family moments, and “just one more” drink can push even a healthy heart into an irregular rhythm. Yep… your heart feels the holidays, too.

A few heart-friendly holiday rules:
- Have fun but keep it in a healthy range.Switch out an extra cocktail for a refreshing juice or seltzer instead
- Stay hydrated and in the mix with low sugar drinks or club soda in between your party sips

And hey, if the rhythm feels “off,” or symptoms last more than a few minutes? Chest pain? Dizziness? Shortness of breath? 🚨
Get checked. No holiday tradition is worth ignoring your heart.
