Prompting and fading is a method of gradually reducing assistance and cues until tasks are performed individually.

Prompts are supplemental cues (verbal, physical, visual, gestural, etc.) provided to increase the likelihood that a learner emits the correct response.

Fading is the systematic reduction or removal of prompts.

Prompts can vary from minimal support/most independence to most support/least independence.

Fading is vital to ensure independence as it prevents prompt dependency. The end goal is that the learner responds without any added supports.

🎃 Communication: encourage your child to let you know if they need breaks.

🎃 Timing: consider trick-or-treating during times when it might be less crowded.

🎃 Flexibility: consider dressing up with accessories that can be taken on and off, rather than a full costume.

Happy AAC Awareness Month! 🎉

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) describes multiple communication methods used to supplement or replace speech and writing.

AAC includes many different tools and can be utilized by vocal and nonvocal individuals of all ages.

Every voice matters, and AAC helps more voices to be heard! 🗣️

🎒📚 Back to School Tips 📚🎒

Heading back to school can be exciting — and overwhelming — for kids and families alike. Here are a few tips to help make the transition smoother:

✅ Start the Routine Early
Begin waking up, eating meals, and going to bed at school-year times before school starts. Predictability helps reduce anxiety!

✅ Use Visual Schedules
Help your child know what to expect each day with a visual routine. It builds independence and reduces uncertainty.

✅ Practice School Skills at Home
From opening lunch containers to raising your hand, practicing daily school tasks can build confidence before Day 1.

✅ Talk About Emotions
Help your child name and understand their feelings about going back to school.

Emotional regulation is a foundational life skill.

When kids (and adults) learn to manage their emotions, they build healthier relationships, improve focus, reduce anxiety, and make better decisions — in school, at home, and beyond. ✅

Here’s a quick guide to teaching emotional regulation effectively:

✨Identify Triggers & Patterns: Notice what situations spark strong emotions. Patterns reveal what needs attention and support.

✨Teach Emotional Awareness: Give emotions names. Use visuals, stories, or check-ins to help identify what they’re feeling and why.

✨Introduce the Zones of Regulation: Use the color-coded zones (Blue, Green, Yellow, Red) to help them recognize emotional states and talk about them safely.

✨Develop Coping Strategies: Breathing exercises, sensory tools, movement breaks, journaling are all great tools to teach.

✨Reinforce Positive Behavior: Praise efforts to self-regulate. Celebrate small wins. Emotional regulation is a skill that takes time to grow.

It’s about more than just awareness - it’s about acceptance.

Acceptance means listening to autistic voices, honoring and affirming all forms of communication, challenging the idea that “neurotypical” is better, creating inclusive environments, and accepting autistic individuals as they are.

What is Precision Teaching?

A method used in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy that relies heavily on tracking progress and data to measure and analyze behavior. Precision teaching provides an objective understanding of behavior changes over time.

Precision teaching ...

- Breaks down behaviors into measurable components

- Collects data to track progress over time

- Analyzes data to understand how skills are retained and applied

This information is then used to inform the therapy.
