Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS)

Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS) CAMLS' vision is to improve healthcare through lifelong education and training. A robust faculty development program ensures high quality course delivery.

This 90,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art facility integrates three floors of innovative simulation experience with education and research excellence to push the latest advances in health care into practice. CAMLS will define standards for competent practice and expert performance, and will serve as the guidepost for lifelong learning. A learning management system enables learners to track their educational progress and faculty to assess training outcomes. Learners at CAMLS will include health professionals (medicine, nursing, pharmacy, public health, pre-hospital, allied health) across the continuum of education (undergraduate, graduate, and practicing), military healthcare professionals, medical specialty societies, industry representatives, and researchers. CAMLS is part of the USF Health Simulation Consortium, which has received Level I accreditation as a comprehensive education center from the American College of Surgeons (ACS). Multidisciplinary CAMLS staff provide expertise to guide development and design of simulation curricula. The portfolio of activities includes nationally recognized professional society courses (e.g., Advanced Trauma Life Support, Fundamental Critical Care Support, Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery, and Neonatal Resuscitation Program), already available specialty-designed curricula, courses customized to fit specific needs, interprofessional teamwork curricula, individual learner remediation and workforce reintegration programs, assessment of learner competency, and health technology development and commercialization. The nationally recognized Team STEPPS program, sponsored by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), is a featured teamwork model. The debriefing experience is an essential part of adult learning; at CAMLS, reflection is encouraged in a non-threatening, supportive environment. © CAMLS: all rights reserved.

Big things are happening at CAMLS—and they’re shaping the future of healthcare.

Through an exciting collaboration with GE HealthCare, Tampa General Hospital, and USF Health-University of South Florida, CAMLS is now home to the first installation in the United States of the new Allia Moveo system—the third in the world and the first ever installed in a healthcare simulation center.

That momentum continues this week as CAMLS hosts Interventional Solutions NPI Training, welcoming GE Healthcare teams from across the organization to Tampa for several days of collaboration, product education, and hands-on learning focused on the future of interventional care.

Experiences like this highlight the unique role CAMLS plays in the Tampa Medical & Research District—bringing healthcare professionals, educators, and industry innovators together to explore new technologies and advance procedural training.

From groundbreaking technology to hands-on industry education, CAMLS is proud to support the continued evolution of image-guided therapy and minimally invasive care.

How can hospitals better prepare for the next pandemic?

That question was explored at the 2026 Global Virus Network Annual International Scientific Meeting, where global leaders in virology, public health, and clinical care gathered in Tampa to reflect on lessons from COVID-19 and discuss strategies for strengthening pandemic preparedness.

On the final day of the meeting, CAMLS Executive Director and emergency physician Dr. Haru Okuda participated in the panel discussion “Hospital Pandemic Playbook,” moderated by Dr. John Sinnott of USF Health-University of South Florida.
The panel brought together experts from USF Health and Tampa General Hospital to discuss how hospitals can better prepare for emerging infectious threats through stronger collaboration between clinical care, public health, and healthcare workforce training.

Dr. Okuda presented “Training in Uncertainty: Adaptive Simulation During the COVID-19 Pandemic,” highlighting how simulation-based training helped healthcare teams rapidly adapt to evolving clinical challenges when protocols, resources, and information were constantly changing.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, CAMLS partnered with Tampa General Hospital to conduct rapid-cycle simulation training that helped frontline teams safely adapt to new workflows and infection-control protocols.

Insights from this discussion will contribute to a forthcoming Pandemic Playbook being developed collaboratively by Tampa General Hospital, USF Health, and the Global Virus Network to help hospitals strengthen preparedness for future health threats.

CAMLS was proud to participate in last week’s USF Health-University of South Florida MedEd Symposium, where educators, clinicians, and researchers shared innovative approaches to healthcare education.

Jessica Murati, an undergraduate researcher supporting Dr. Shannon Bailey’s Lab, presented research exploring how different extended reality (XR) interaction methods affect performance and learner experience during a simulated defibrillation task.

CAMLS team members Marina Monastyrskaya and Shaterra Blocker shared insights from the 8th Annual USF IPE Day, which brought students and faculty together across disciplines — and internationally with the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) — to collaborate on solutions to global health challenges.

Dr. Michael Simeos also presented a simulation innovation: a low-cost ultrasound-guided pericardiocentesis task trainer designed to help emergency medicine residents practice treating cardiac tamponade in a realistic simulation environment.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the symposium a success!

Welcoming New Faculty to USF Health Morsani College of Medicine — and to the Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS) 👏

Today we were proud to celebrate the official New Faculty Orientation at the USF Health Downtown Building, formally welcoming several exceptional colleagues to the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine.

Although Devid Ribeiro Zille and Kim Star joined CAMLS in Summer 2025, this annual orientation marks their official welcome as Assistant Professors. The event featured remarks from Dean Charles Lockwood, college leadership, and a dynamic Meet the Deans panel.

We are proud of the innovation they are advancing in:
🔹 3D visualization and advanced modeling
🔹 Extended reality and immersive learning
🔹 Educational technology and simulation research

We also celebrated Dr. Kay Everett, new faculty in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Cardiology, who is based at CAMLS and leading important heart failure research initiatives. She will be among the first faculty to leverage our new GE HealthCare Allia system for advanced cardiovascular research.

It was a pleasure to stand alongside Dr. Everett and her Chief of Cardiology, Dr. Matar, as we continue strengthening the bridge between clinical excellence and simulation-based advancement.
CAMLS is proud to be home to faculty who are not only educators — but innovators shaping the future of care.

Welcome officially to MCOM. We’re excited for what’s ahead.

Today marks the culmination of an exciting three days at the Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS) as we welcomed the boards of both Tampa General Hospital and GE HealthCare to celebrate a historic milestone — the first installation of GE HealthCare’s Allia Moveo in a simulation center and the first of this new technology in the United States. This is only the third installation worldwide!

The Allia Moveo is a next-generation, image-guided therapy system designed to enhance mobility, workflow efficiency, and image quality for minimally invasive procedures.

Now housed at CAMLS, this technology represents another major advancement for the Tampa Medical & Research District. Students, faculty, and practicing clinicians can train with cutting-edge operating room technology that supports interventional and endovascular surgeries — elevating education, research, and clinical excellence.

This achievement is made possible through our close partnership with Tampa General Hospital. Together, we’re demonstrating what’s possible when academic excellence, clinical expertise, and innovative technology come together.

Today, USF President Rhea Law held her final official event at CAMLS — a fitting milestone in her remarkable journey with us.

Rhea was Chair of the USF Board of Trustees when CAMLS was first approved. She later served as Chair of USF HPCC, the organization that operates CAMLS, before being elevated to President of the University of South Florida.

Her vision, leadership, and steadfast commitment to excellence have shaped CAMLS from the very beginning. Her guiding force will always be part of our mission as we continue advancing patient-centered care and making a meaningful impact in Tampa Bay and beyond.

Thank you, Rhea Law, for all you have done for USF, CAMLS, and our community. 💚
