AI model predicts Tommy John surgery 100 days in advance with 93% accuracy
I'm not an AI expert, but this blew my mind...
A new study analyzed 5,537,981 pitches and discovered that Vision Transformers (ViT) (a type of deep learning model I break down in the full article) can detect subtle mechanical flaws invisible to the naked eye.
Here's what potentially makes this a game-changer: a 100-day warning window that aligns perfectly with non-operative rehab protocols. For the first time, teams could have enough lead time to actually intervene before surgery becomes inevitable.
The algorithm identifies three specific red flags (I discussed the findings on the my blog... I tried my best at simplifying it haha)
