With a history of osteoporosis and prior surgeries and recurring persistent hip pain resulting in hip arthroplasty revision, our Florida Rehabilitation Hospital at Tampa was chosen by a female patient for extensive orthopedic rehabilitation.

Before surgery, she lived independently, managing her daily activities including driving herself. However, she required assistance for walking, dressing, and transferring from bed to chair after her hip surgery. Our physical and occupational therapy teams used the patient’s determination to rebuild her strength, coordination, and function. Our nurses and physicians provided comprehensive medical management, wound care, and education to prepare her for a safe transition home. Through intensive rehabilitation, she progressed from needing significant assistance to completing most daily tasks and self-care with minimal support. We were honored to provide rehabilitation treatments and help her return home with confidence in her mobility so she could enjoy life again.

It’s that fun time of year with holiday events and social gatherings. However, it’s also flu season. We recognize National Influenza Vaccination Week, and our hospitals follow all state and national guidelines for vaccine administration and tracking for our employees and our patients. As available, we also offer influenza and pneumococcal vaccinations to our patients. We ask our team members to wear masks if they can’t be vaccinated, and we encourage all of our visitors to refrain from visiting if they have recently been ill or currently have any flu symptoms.

Supporting patients also means supporting the families who are often the caregivers. Caregiver education, resource connections, and emotional support are all part of our discharge planning to ensure the patient’s loved ones feel confident and equipped every step of the way.

Martha’s story is a powerful reminder of the impact caregivers make every day. After her husband suffered a traumatic brain injury, her plans for an advanced degree and writing career changed overnight. She stepped into a full-time caregiver role, learning to navigate doctor’s appointments, therapy sessions, and life’s unexpected challenges. Out of her experience, Martha founded Caregiver Coffees, local support groups that now meet across Louisiana, offering guidance, encouragement, and a warm cup of coffee.

We’re honored that Caregiver Coffees in Shreveport partners with one of our sister hospitals, Shreveport Rehabilitation Hospital, to provide resources and communities for caregivers.
