What I Learned in My 6 Years as a Team Chiropractor in the National Football League
Being a team chiropractor in the NFL for six years has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. Working with elite athletes at the highest level of sport teaches you lessons that extend far beyond the sidelines. These are things that I have carried on in my own self growth.
Here are a few things the NFL taught me about health, performance, and life:
1. The Best Ability Is Availability
Talent matters, but staying healthy is what keeps athletes on the field. Consistent recovery, mobility work, and proactive treatment are just as important as training and game preparation.
✅ Make your physical health and fitness one of your life’s priorities.
2. Small Details Make a Big Difference
At the professional level, the margin between winning and losing is razor thin. Proper biomechanics, joint function, and movement quality can significantly impact performance and durability.
✅ Take pride in your daily work towards perfection.
3. Recovery Is a Skill
The NFL season is a grind. Athletes who prioritize recovery—sleep, soft tissue work, chiropractic care, and proper nutrition—are the ones who perform at a high level week after week.
✅ Life can be a grind but it rewards those who have grit.
4. Trust Is Everything
Working with professional athletes requires trust. Players need to know their healthcare team is focused on helping them perform at their best while protecting their long-term health.
✅ Surround yourself with peers that you can learn from. If you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room.
5. The Mind Drives the Body
Physical preparation is critical, but mental resilience separates great athletes from the rest. Confidence, discipline, and mindset are powerful forces in performance and recovery.
✅ Your discipline and effort creates “luck” and opportunity. Make your bed, get your mind and body right every single day.
Serving in the NFL has reinforced my belief that the great players are not just great students of the game. But they are also great students at life!
