The FDA has officially removed the black box warning on estrogen-based hormone therapy products — a long-overdue change that better reflects today’s science.
The original warnings were added in the early 2000s after a flawed study claimed an increased risk of breast cancer diagnosis. That study:
• Did not show statistically significant risk increase
• Included participants older than typical HRT patients, thus under-representing the benefit to younger women in perimenopause
• Used older hormone formulations no longer widely used today
Current evidence shows that HRT offers significant benefits for women under 60 and those within 10 years of menopause.
This decision empowers Providers to offer accurate, evidence-based treatment for women experiencing fatigue, low libido, mood swings, and other menopausal symptoms.
