“Being still, being quiet and reflective is not something that many people are comfortable with. We are a people on the move. We are driven to produce, to be productive, and to accomplish as much as we can. We don’t know how to stop and be still, especially in these days leading up to Christmas. “

Today, December 21, 2021 is the Winter Solstice. The term “solstice” comes from the Latin words ‘sol’ (Sun) and ‘sistere’ (to stand still) because, during the solstice, the angle between the Sun’s rays and the plane of the Earth’s equator appears to stand still.

Being still, being quiet and reflective is not something that many people are comfortable with. We are a people on the move. We are driven to produce, to be productive, and to accomplish as much as we can. We don’t know how to stop and be still, especially in these days leading up to Christmas.

Yet our faith tradition is filled with those hermits, mystics, contemplatives and penitents who were drawn away from the noise, the clamor and busyness of life to search for God in the stillness of the wilderness, in caves and deserted places.
May we find the time and space to be in the quiet stillness of our God. In this stillness and peace may we hear our God call, “Arise, my beloved, my beautiful one and come!”
