By far one of the most common shoulder injuries in a softball athlete πŸ₯Žβ£

Tendonitis means inflammation of the tendon. So in this case, it’s inflammation in the biceps πŸ’ͺ🏼 muscle tendon.⁣
⁣
If you’ve ever had it, you can probably pin-point a specific spot right in the front of your throwing shoulder 😫⁣
⁣
𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 π’‚π’„π’•π’Šπ’—π’Šπ’•π’Šπ’†π’” π’Žπ’Šπ’ˆπ’‰π’• 𝒃𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓 π’Šπ’•?⁣

It’s mostly painful or you have discomfort..⁣
⁣
⭕️ Right after release point when you’re throwing overhand⁣
⭕️ Your follow through when pitching, especially a pitch with higher speeds like your fastball or rise ball⁣
⭕️ When you lift your arm above shoulder height ⁣
⁣
𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕’𝒔 π’Šπ’• 𝒇𝒆𝒆𝒍 π’π’Šπ’Œπ’†?⁣

Most people, myself included, would describe it as being a β€œsharp” type of pain 😣⁣

⁣
My first piece of advice would be to work on having a strong, healthy rotator cuff. This will help protect the shoulder joint, as well as the biceps tendon when you’re throwing! πŸ™ŒπŸΌβ£
⁣
I’ll include ways to build a strong rotator cuff in future posts! ⁣

Is this type of information helpful? What else do you want to know about shoulder injuries? ⁣

Meet Emma! ⁣
⁣
Emma was one of the first players I ever worked with. She’s got a special place in my heart ❀️⁣
⁣
Prior to working together she didn’t have the endurance, or the accuracy to hit her spots regularly. ⁣
⁣
After working together for a few months, Emma was consistently getting double-digit strike outs per game, and was able to pitch an entire 7 innings without fatigue or shoulder pain πŸ˜ŠπŸ™ŒπŸΌ booyah! ⁣
⁣
However, one of my favorite things about working with softball athletes is the look on a girls face when she achieves something she’s been working so hard for. That face of pure joy πŸ₯° ⁣
⁣
It’s a feeling I really can’t put into words very well, but it warms my heart like no other πŸ’• ⁣
⁣
Forever a game that serves a special place in my heart. It’s taught me a lot of life lessons I probably wouldn’t have learned elsewhere, and it’s brought some really amazing people into my life πŸ₯Žβ€οΈβ£

[ Ice ❄️vs. Heat πŸ”₯ ]

A question I get a lot from players is β€œshould I use ice or heat after I get done throwing?”

The answer to that is it depends. They both decrease pain, so it’s easy to get them confused! πŸ€” How long has your arm been hurting for?

If you’ve been in discomfort for a short period of time, say 6 weeks or less, you might want to try icing ❄️ first. Ice should be used for acute pain, and inflammation.

If you’ve been hurting for longer, say more than 6 weeks, you’re mostly likely better off with heatπŸ”₯. Heat helps decrease joint stiffness and loosens up our muscles.

However, I have a lot of athletes (and patients) tell me that one works much better than the other. You know your body better than anyone else, so whichever one makes you feel better, then stick with that one πŸ™‚

Hope that helps! Let me know what questions you have about ice ❄️ vs. heat πŸ”₯

Yep. Always in the weight room for 3 months in the off-season, but the radar gun never showed for it 😱

Every year on Black Friday our team would start training in the weight room. All of my teammates who didn’t play a winter sport would go to the weight room 3 d/wk.

We would all do the same exercises.
πŸ₯Ž Pitchers would do exercises xyz
πŸ₯Ž Catchers would do the same exercises xyz
πŸ₯Ž Outfielders would do the same xyz
πŸ₯Ž Infielders would do the same xyz

I πŸ…•πŸ…”πŸ…›πŸ…£ myself feeling physically better and much stronger when I left the weight room, but it didn’t add any mph on my fastball 🀯

< read that again >

So, how was it that I 𝐟𝐞π₯𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫, but my pitching π°πšπ¬π§β€™π 𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐒𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐟𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫? πŸ€”

I threw the same speed the majority of my high school career...
..Because there was no customization

🚫No pitching specific training
🚫No focus on strengthening my arm throughout my pitching motion
🚫No focus on hip, glutes, lower body strengthening (tip: your power actually should be coming from here, not your arm πŸ™ŒπŸΌ)

Each position on the field has different demands that are placed upon our body. The demands of a pitcher aren’t the same as a left fielder, or a 3rd baseman, or a catcher.

So π–π‡π˜ train the same⁉️

Do/did you or your athlete have a specific softball strengthening program? What does your strengthening program consist of?

Let me know below or shoot me a message!
