Message to our students, alumni, and stakeholders from CBCS Dean Julie Serovich:

A recent communication in the College of Behavioral and Community Sciences at the University of South Florida inaccurately stated that a decision was made to end an undergraduate major in American Sign Language and Interpreting. No such decision has been made. USF is still accepting applications for students interested in this major who wish to enroll for the summer or fall 2022 semesters.

As part of USF’s annual process to review the productivity of all majors and degree programs, the College of Behavioral and Community Sciences planned to recommend discontinuing the major, in part because a bachelor’s degree in the field is not a necessary credential to become a certified interpreter. However, the college’s proposal was not submitted to or reviewed by university leadership, who would have to approve of terminating a major.

USF recognizes there is a need in the community for certified interpreters, and the university remains committed to offering training that prepares students for this field. The College of Behavioral and Community Sciences plans to work with partners within the university and across the Tampa Bay region to develop an innovative approach to expand the number of certified American Sign Language interpreters who serve our community.

Sincerely,

Julie

On Wednesday, May 12th, the CSD Speech-Language Clinic was presented with a portable info-loop by the Carol Cornelius Memorial and the Tampa Gem Sertoma Club. Carol Cornelius (pictured) was an active member of the Tampa Gem Sertoma Club which focuses its volunteering efforts on improving the quality of life for those at risk or impacted by hearing loss. This info-loop was generously gifted to CSD as part of Sertoma’s 2021 National Service Project promoting further hearing access. Info-loops are an assistive listening system that is compatible with technology inside hearing aids and cochlear implants. CSD will be able to utilize this portable loop for individual and group speech therapy sessions and as an additional resource for any of our CSD students or faculty that have hearing loss and need greater accessibility during meetings and group events.
