How many hours of ABA should a child get each week? 🤔

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer and more hours doesn’t always mean more progress.

ABA intensity should be individualized, child-led, and built gradually. Quality, engagement, and balance matter more than filling a schedule. Therapy should support growth while still leaving time for play, rest, school, and simply being a kid.

The goal isn’t more therapy. The goal is the right amount of support for each child. 💛

Big congratulations to Kennedy for passing her BCBA exam! 👏

This is no easy feat. To even sit for the exam, candidates must complete thousands of hours of supervised direct and indirect ABA experience. After that, they take a 4-hour comprehensive exam covering behavior assessment, ethics, treatment planning, data analysis, and clinical decision-making.

We are so proud of the hard work, dedication, and commitment Kennedy has shown to the field and to the families she serves. 💙

✨ Milestone Monday: Answering WH Questions ✨

Answering who, what, where, when, and why questions is a big language milestone that supports comprehension, storytelling, classroom participation, and social connection.

🧠 Typically developing children often begin to:

Answer “what” questions around age 2–3

Answer “who” & “where” questions around age 3

Answer “when” & “why” questions closer to ages 4–5

💡 How we support this in therapy:

Using books, pictures, and play-based activities

Modeling answers before expecting responses

Starting with concrete questions (“What is he eating?”) before abstract ones (“Why did he do that?”)

📌 Remember: every child develops at their own pace and difficulty with WH questions can be a sign that extra language support may help.

Thinking about becoming an RBT?
Not all ABA companies are created equal.
These red flags come directly from my staff, experienced RBTs who were asked what they wish they had known when job searching. Their insights highlight patterns we still see far too often in our field.

When we know better, we do better.

If a company prioritizes compliance, convenience, or appearance over communication, dignity, and safety, that isn’t quality ABA... and it’s not an environment where clinicians or clients thrive.

✨ Milestone Monday: Introducing Signs ✨

Signing can be a powerful way to support early communication but what you start with matters.

While “more” is a popular first sign, it’s often overgeneralized. Babies may use it to mean milk, eat, play, help, or keep going, which doesn’t clearly communicate their needs.

👉 Instead, start with specific, functional signs like milk, eat, drink, or help. These teach that different words mean different things supporting clearer communication and reducing frustration.

Once those are established, then introduce “more” to expand language.
