Today marks the start of National Nurse Practitioner Week. According to the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), "For more than 60 years, nurse practitioners (NPs) have been providing primary, acute and specialty health care to millions of patients across the lifespan. NPs evaluate patients, order and interpret tests, make diagnoses, write prescriptions and bring a comprehensive perspective to health care in nearly 1 billion patient visits each year."

NPs must become certified as a registered nurse, earn a Master of Science in Nursing, complete certification in their chosen specialty, and obtain APRN licensure.
