❤️ Meet James, who was diagnosed in the womb with total anomalous pulmonary venous return, a rare congenital heart defect where all four pulmonary veins connect abnormally to the right atrium instead of the left. His mother, Jenny, was 5 months pregnant when the condition was diagnosed, and our fetal and pediatric cardiology team closely monitored both mom and baby every step of the way.
When James arrived earlier than expected, his journey quickly intensified. He underwent open-heart surgery in our Patel Children’s Heart Institute just hours after birth, bravely facing more in his first days of life than most ever will.
Jenny remembers the fear and uncertainty that came with his diagnosis—but also remembers the comfort she and her husband, Cody, felt knowing their son was in expert, compassionate hands. From regular prenatal monitoring to constant updates during surgery, they never felt alone.
Today, James is 6 months old and thriving. During Heart Month, join us in sending love and strength to this little heart warrior and his family, and thanking our congenital cardiac team for the lifesaving care they provide each and every day. 💙
