This is the picture from where I was sitting at a meeting.

I visited with a funeral director the other day in Seminole. It was surreal as we were talking business, but sitting in his “selection center.” Every day, people find themselves in a surreal storm as they sit at that table picking out a casket for a loved one that passed away a few hours prior. Shock, overwhelming sadness and emotional paralysis.

Add financial trauma. The most simple cremation is a few thousand dollars. Add a casket and service and the rest and you’re talking several thousand. A lot of people sit at the table I was at and the financial trauma is the final psychological straw.

That’s part of the reason we’re rolling Form America nationally. One of the goals is to become the best at helping people who don’t have insurance get a cheap “final insurance” policy in place so when their loved ones are sitting at this table, they don’t have to worry about how much this costs.

As a licensed independent Florida insurance and annuities agent, I take professional standards seriously. I recently completed the Florida Annuity Best Interests and Standards course and passed the examination with a score of 100 percent.

What continues to concern me is how many consumers rely on insurance and annuity advisors who only need a minimum passing score of 70 percent to become certified. Many take the test multiple times just to reach that threshold. When you are trusting someone to help protect your retirement savings and guide you through decisions that affect your long term financial security, their level of knowledge matters.

You do not need to work with me. I already have a full time job. But please ask any advisor you are considering what they scored on their licensing examinations. Their level of mastery is directly connected to the quality of advice you will receive.

For transparency, I earned a 97 percent on my Florida insurance licensing exam and 100 percent on the annuity exam. I hold myself to a higher standard so that you can feel confident about the guidance you receive.

The Securities and Exchange Commission’s Regulation Best Interest rule—Proposed in 2018 and finalized in June 2019, the SEC’s “Regulation BI” establishes a best-interest standard of conduct for broker-dealers (and their representatives) beyond the previous suitability obligation, and requires a broker-dealer to act in the best interest of the customer when making a recommendation and to place the customer’s interest ahead of the broker-dealer or other associated persons.

Why should you care? In short, this means we are required under law to act in YOUR best interest, not the best interest of the carriers, when we are talking with you about annuities. And, as an independent agent, I am required to find products that are suitable for you, not sell you what some company wants me to push. In short, I work for you, in your best interest, when we are discussing annuities in the State of Florida. As... it should be.
