Benedict (Benny) Wayne MaCuk Jr.

Benedict “Benny” Wayne MaCuk Jr., 78, of Round Rock, Texas, passed away peacefully on February 10, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on February 1, 1948, in Joliet, Illinois, Ben’s life was defined by courage, devotion, and a deep love for his family and country.

Ben moved to Taylor, Texas, in 1952, where he grew up and built lifelong friendships. He graduated from Taylor High School in 1966, excelling in athletics. As a senior, he was quarterback, safety, and captain of the football team, earning Most Valuable All‑District honors and leading his team to state. He also captained the basketball team and was All‑District in baseball.

In 1967, Ben answered the call to serve his country. He spent four years in the United States Army, graduating from the Special Forces Green Berets and serving two tours in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne Division as a Forward Observer. His bravery earned him numerous awards including 2 Bronze stars with V for valor for acts of bravery, the Army Commendation medal for heroism, the Air medal for heroism in aerial flight and combat, and a Brave Eagle coin symbolizing his willingness to give above and beyond the call of duty. His time in the military shaped his character — disciplined, steady, and selfless — qualities he carried into every chapter of his life.

After returning home, Ben earned his degree in air conditioning and heating from Texas State Technical College. He worked in the HVAC field before becoming co‑owner of B&J Builders. He spent the remainder of his career with Maxwell Auto Dealership, where he met Cindy, the love of his life, in 1991.

Ben and Cindy were married on May 7, 1993, building a life grounded in deep affection, shared values, and unwavering devotion to one another and their family. Ben and Cindy cherished their beach vacations with family, but Rockport held a special place in their hearts, and it became their home away from home for many years.

One of Ben’s greatest joys was watching his grandchildren and nephew play the sports they loved. Whether it was baseball, football, softball, hockey, or soccer, he was always there—cheering, smiling, occasionally yelling at the refs, but always full of pride.

Surrounded by family, Ben was baptized on January 5, 2024; a moment of faith and renewal that brought him great peace.

Ben lived a life defined by courage, strength, humility, and love. He was a man who showed up—for his country, for his family, and for his community. His stories, his laughter, and his steady presence will be deeply missed, but the impact he made will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Ben was preceded in death by his father, Benedict Wayne MaCuk, stepmother, Tassie MaCuk, his mother, Billye Jean Wesolowski, and stepfather, Joseph Wesolowski. He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Cindy MaCuk, his brother, Richard MaCuk and wife Kay, his sisters-in-law Carla Clegg and husband Brian, Cynthia Beran, and Kathy Beran, his children, Stephanie MaCuk, Laura Nuckolls and husband Heath, and John MaCuk and wife Kendall. Ben was a devoted grandfather to Ashlyn MaCuk and Kevin Scott, Alec Griffith, Ben and Griffin Nuckolls, Noah, Luke and Levi MaCuk, and Dani Holdsworth. His legacy continues through his great‑grandchildren, Ava and Ivy Scott, and Paisley Holdsworth. He is also survived by his nephews, Connor Clegg and Keith MaCuk, and his niece, Meredith MaCuk.

Honorary Pallbearers are John MaCuk, Richard MaCuk, Alec Griffith, Heath Nuckolls, Ben Nuckolls, Griffin Nuckolls, Kevin Scott, Brian Clegg, Brent Bowen, Dharan S K, Gary Mohel, James Zvonek, John Fox, Jesse Pospisil, Pete Zimmerhanzel, Danny Hughes, and Chuck Buzan.

The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to Tim Sherman, Chaplain, Raven Rogers, Dimas Caquias, and Keith Toolan, with Concho Hearts Hospice, and Mary Pham with Home Instead, for their kindness and compassionate care of Ben and family over the past year.

Funeral services will be Sunday, February 15, 2026, at 2:00 pm, at Providence Funeral Home in Taylor, TX, with a reception immediately following at the SPJST Lodge in Taylor, TX.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to CityView Bible Church in Round Rock (www.cityviewbible.org) or Pivot Faith and Valor (www.pivot-faithandvalor.org/en/).

Johnnie James Simcik

Johnnie James Simcik, 82, of Granger, Texas, passed away on Thursday, January 29, 2026. He was born on May 25, 1943 in Taylor, Texas to Lad and Mary (Polasek) Simcik.

Johnnie was preceded in death by his parents and the love of his life, wife Kathy (Johle) Simcik. He was also experienced in animal husbandry and beekeeping. Alongside farming, he worked for Dale Cockerell at Dale’s Essenhaus in Wahlburg for over 51 years as cook, friend, builder and jack of all trades, including running dry cleaners and laundromats. Johnnie was resourceful and could handle pretty much anything asked of him.

Growing up on the San Gabriel river offered Johnnie many opportunities for hunting, fishing, boating and camping – he loved the outdoors. He thoroughly enjoyed Czech culture, food and music, cooking, eating out and socializing with those he knew in the Granger, Taylor and surrounding communities. He enjoyed traveling and seeing new sights – he was a lifelong learner.

Johnnie was kind, loving, loyal, pure-hearted, and giving. He loved God, his family, friends and country, and was always willing to help and serve others. He usually had a twinkle in his eye and liked to joke – and he never met a stranger. Though Johnnie will be deeply missed, we take great comfort in knowing he will be reunited with his loved ones in Jesus Christ, and we will see him again one day.

Gregory Glen Monroe

“He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly, to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Greg Monroe, known to many as the “Gentle Giant,” lived a life that quietly reflected these words every single day.

On January 28, 2026 Greg went to join his Master. Greg was born in Austin to Marilyn Monroe Bettis and later guided in life by his stepfather, Richard Bettis. He graduated from Austin High and continued his education at what is now Texas A&M University Commerce. He spent his entire career with the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts before taking early retirement.

Greg believed that faith was not something you attended, but something you lived. He was a student of the Bible and chose to express his Christianity through action. The Book of James tells us to be doers of the word, and not hearers only. That was Greg’s quiet testimony.

Greg had a curious spirit and a deep appreciation for beauty and learning. His backyard was filled with exotic plants and flowers. He attended his bonsai trees with patience and care. Greg purchased several didgeridoos and took lessons at UT to learn how to play them. He kept six rare chickens he affectionally called “The Girls” and loved sharing their organic eggs with family and friends. Greg was an excellent cook and loved preparing special meals for those he loved. He found great peace at the beach, traveling to almost all Caribbean Islands, the shores of Florida and Alabama and many memorable trips to South Padre Island.

Greg never married nor had children. Being an only child, he poured his love into his extended family and godchildren he deeply cherished. He was proceeded in love by his grandmothers, Elsie Guenther and Louise Bettis. He dearly loved his aunts, Loretta Patschke and Karon Guenther. He was a devoted cousin to Candi and Chad Patschke, Denise and Brandi Davis, Colee and Wyatt Bolding, Trevor, Tanner and Peyton Patschke. He held a special place in his heart for his godchildren, Ashtyn and Rynlee Grandjean.

Greg will be laid to rest at a private graveside service beside his maternal grandmother, a wish that will now be fulfilled.

“And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:7 That peace is how Greg lived. And that peace is how he will be remembered.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to the American Kidney Foundation

Colin Richard Gillies

Colin Richard Gillies passed away on January 27, 2026, following a short but courageous battle with cancer.

Colin was born on September 13, 1955, in Salisbury, Rhodesia, to Isabel and Jack Gillies. His early years in Africa were filled with adventure, notably an attempted kidnapping by a baboon that was stopped by his mother. At the age of eight, he relocated with his family to Southampton, England, where he spent much of his youth before beginning the next chapter of his life abroad. He would live in England until being roped by a girl from Texas.

Colin met his beloved wife, Liz, on a blind date, an encounter that would mark the beginning of a profound and enduring love. They shared 28 years of marriage, characterized by deep devotion, mutual respect, and joy. Together, they lived and traveled across the world, treasuring every moment. Liz often reflects that her life truly began the day she met Colin.

He had a lifelong passion for sailing and automobiles. Colin found great satisfaction in restoring and maintaining cars and took pride in understanding how things worked. He also taught sailing along the coast of Emsworth, where he found peace and fulfillment on the water.

Colin earned a business degree from the University of Southampton while raising his two young daughters. He built a successful career in information technology, concluding his professional life with SAS Institute.

Later in life, Colin embraced ranch living, where he enjoyed working outdoors, completing hands-on projects, and spending time in his carefully organized workshop. An accomplished woodworker, he approached every task with patience, precision, and care—truly a “measure twice, cut once” man.

Known for his calm demeanor, gentle wisdom, and understated sense of humor, Colin touched the lives of many. Above all, he was a devoted family man, deeply committed to his wife, children, and grandchildren.

Colin is survived by his loving wife, Liz; his daughters, Laura Farrelly and Ella Richardson; his son, Jack; his grandchildren, Louis, Isabelle, and Toby; and his brothers, Iain Gillies and Neil Gillies.

He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in support of The Christopher House. Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on January 31 at Providence.

The family extends their sincere gratitude to the Sletten family—Steve, Mary Beth, and Spencer—for their steadfast presence and support until the end. Special thanks are also extended to Mary Linda Hays for her kindness and care, including preparing Colin’s “magic soup” countless times.

Colin was a strong and faithful Christian, and we know he will be waiting at the gate of Heaven.
