Children's National seeking high school juniors and seniors for a few appointments available in Blacksburg in early December.

We are looking for juniors and seniors in high school to participate in the SOAR study! Our appointments are usually near DC, but we will be seeing a few appointments in Blacksburg, hopefully in early December! The study is focused on exploring the transition period from high school into adulthood for autistic teens, and how changes in services can affect their transition outcomes. We believe our study could benefit families in learning more about how factors such as daily living skills, executive functioning, and quality of life impact transitions.

To participate, teens must:
have an autism diagnosis, or suspected of having autism, AND
be in their last two (2) years of high school (Junior/Senior) OR a transition program (so we can evaluate participants across a change in their transition services).
For teens who do not yet have an autism diagnosis, we can provide a brief report with their autism assessment and brief IQ results. This can be a great opportunity for families on a waitlist for an assessment, or for any families who are interested in participating in autism research.

See attached flyer for more information. Interested families should contact Alejandro Todd (Datodd@childrensnational.org).

Turning 18 is a big deal. An 18-year-old is legally considered an adult in Virginia and can make their own legal, financial, medical, and educational decisions. For some individuals with disabilities, this will not be an issue. Others may need support. This workshop will share basic information about things that need to be considered as your loved one turns 18.

This webinar will be presented on Zoom. It will not be recorded.

A new Generations United report reveals that grandparents and other relatives raising children save taxpayers more than $10.5 billion every year by keeping the children out of foster care, but they do it at great personal cost.

Many live on fixed incomes and step in with little warning to care for children who have faced trauma, substance use, or loss. They stretch every dollar to provide stability and love, yet most receive little to no support. These families need help now.

Our 2025 State of Grandfamilies & Kinship Care Update, The Costs of Caregiving: Why Supporting Grandfamilies & Kinship Care is Good for Children and Our Nation’s Economy, highlights:
▪️ National data on the economic and social impact of kin caregivers
▪️ The challenges families face in providing stability and care
▪️ Policy solutions that are cost-effective, targeted, and bipartisan-friendly
▪️ State-by-state data on children being raised by kin

Together, we can ensure every caregiver and child has the support they deserve.
