Scoliosis
Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) is the most common childhood scoliosis. Idiopathic refers to scoliosis that happened by chance and is not related to an injury, birth defect or neuromuscular disease. AIS receives its name due to the age at which the diagnosis is made (11-17 years). The curve of the spine is called the Cobb angle. The goal of treatment is to prevent the curve from progressing to 50 degrees. Kids with curves less than 45-50 degrees when they are done growing are unlikely to progress into adulthood. Bracing is sometimes used to stop or slow progression. When curves exceed 50 degrees with growth remaining, we discuss surgery. Common early signs are shoulder, chest, waist or pelvis asymmetry. Some kids develop a bump or hump on the back of the rib cage when bending over. Occasionally scoliosis is suspected by school nurse evaluations. If you suspect scoliosis in your child, reach out to us for an evaluation at 605-331-5890
