Ever notice how discomfort can feel stronger on some days… and lighter on others? 🤔

It’s not always as simple as “more sensation = more physical issue.”

Modern science shows that the brain is constantly weighing signals of danger vs. safety — and that balance can influence how intense something feels.

⚖️ Think of it like a scale:

🔴 Danger signals can include:

• Stressful environments
• Negative thought loops about the body
• Poor sleep or feeling run down
• Situations that create tension or pressure

🟢 Safety signals can include:

• Feeling supported and understood
• Calm environments or relaxing activities
• Confidence in how the body works
• Positive movement experiences

💡 Big idea: The nervous system is adaptable. When more “safety” signals are present, the body can become less reactive over time.

That means small, intentional shifts in your day can make a bigger difference than you might think.

Emphasizing more Safety messages vs. Danger messages is one way we get stellar results at Release Muscle Therapy.

Watching work on the outside hip here — an area that often holds a ton of tension and can contribute to irritation throughout the hips and down the leg.

This release technique is designed to help calm things down, improve mobility, and support more comfortable movement when the outer hip and glute region feels tight, irritated, or overworked.

If sitting, walking, workouts, or even sleeping have been feeling harder because that area just won’t let go, this is exactly the kind of hands-on work we can focus on in session.

Ready to get to the root of it and start moving with less discomfort?

Most people think neck tension is a muscle problem.
But it’s often a nervous system response.

That’s why:
• Stretching only creates temporary relief
• Excessively aggressive massage can sometimes increase pain
• Posture corrections rarely stick

Because the focus stays on the symptom… not the signal.

When the brain perceives stress, it can create protective tension patterns.

So unless the system feels safe again, the body tends to return to those patterns.

This is where Release Muscle Therapy takes a different approach:

→ Instead of forcing change, it works with the system
→ Helps reduce sensitivity
→ Supports more natural, comfortable movement that is threat-free

That’s how change becomes more sustainable over time.

The psoas continues to be the "boogeyman" of all things pain in the lower back and hips...

In particular, most approaches blame tightness or tension in the psoas for creating the problem.

BUT...

More often than not, we at Release Muscle Therapy find the psoas weak and lacking endurance.

This is often overlooked because the standard clinical test for psoas strength is just a simple isometric test designed to look for pathology in the muscle or nerves.

We focus on developing standards for each muscle group.

Here is a simple overview of how we address psoas weakness.

Most people have never tested their hip flexor strength beyond the basics — and the results are eye-opening. 👀

The standard clinical assessment (holding one leg at a 45-degree angle and resisting downward pressure) only measures *static* strength.

It tells us nothing about endurance, full range of motion, or how the hip flexors actually perform during everyday movement.

Below is a breakdown of how we at Release Muscle Therapy properly test and train the psoas — with two bodyweight exercises anyone can start today.

Here's what's covered in the slideshow 👇

🔹 The Basic Clinical Test — A useful starting point for assessing isometric strength, but just the beginning of the picture.

🔹 Move 1: Supine Leg Raise — A classic move that builds balance between abdominal stability and hip flexor strength. Start with 1 perfect rep and work toward 10. Beginners can modify with bent-knee alternating toe taps for 60–90 seconds of continuous movement.

🔹 Move 2: Split Squat — One of the most underrated ways to strengthen the psoas through a full range of motion. 3 seconds down, tap the floor, 3 seconds back up. Goal: 3 sets of 15 on each side.

These two movements together can make a serious difference in lower body strength, stability, and overall movement quality.

Neck pain isn't always coming from the neck. 🧠

Many people find that neck tension keeps returning even after massage, chiropractic work, or physical therapy.

Here's why.

Chronic neck pain is almost never just a "neck problem." Swipe through the infographic below and you'll see exactly what we mean. The ribcage mechanics, breathing habits, jaw position, airway health, and nervous system sensitivity all play a direct role in whether your neck stays locked up — and whether any work done on it actually sticks.

Here's the part most people miss:

🫁 When people breathe by shrugging their shoulders, the neck muscles end up working overtime — every single breath, all day long.

😴 Sleep apnea and airway issues don't just wreck your sleep — they force your body into postures that strangle your neck muscles and amplify pain signals.

🦷 Your jaw and your cervical spine share deep neurological real estate. A bite imbalance can be the hidden driver behind years of stubborn neck tension.

⚡ And sometimes it's not mechanical at all — a sensitized nervous system can generate real, intense pain from nothing more than a cold breeze.

This is exactly how we approach neck pain at Release Muscle Therapy. Not just addressing where it hurts, but finding *why* it hurts.

Foam rolling the spine isn’t just about rolling around until it feels intense.

Done incorrectly, it often turns into:
• Excess pressure on the lower back
• Arching from the wrong segments
• Or missing the stiff thoracic areas entirely

Long hours sitting and repetitive postures can leave the mid-back feeling restricted.
But random rolling rarely improves true extension mobility.

In this video, I break down:

✔ Where to position the roller safely
✔ How to mobilize specific spinal segments instead of compressing the lumbar spine
✔ A controlled way to access the upper thoracic area
✔ A low-force technique for the lower thoracic / upper lumbar region

Spinal mobility work should be precise, not aggressive.

We see a good amount of SI joint pain in our office.

One of the biggest complaints is what to do for pain relief when having to sit for long periods of time.

Things ache when nerves don't get what they want:

- Movement
- Blood flow
- Oxygen and nutrients

Of course the best solution is getting up and moving around, but that isn't always possible.

So, here is an alternative. Do this when sitting throughout the day to encourage movement and mobility of the hips and lower spine to make that SI joint region happy.

Ever feel like you’ve done *everything* for your pain…

And you’re still stuck in that weird in-between space where you’re “fine”… but not really?

A while back I sat down for a podcast interview about what’s actually going on in chronic pain — and why so many people get lost in what I call **“the gap.”**

In this episode, I unpack:

🔥 The difference between acute pain and chronic pain (and why they should NOT be addressed the same)
🔥 Why MRIs and posture don’t tell the full story
🔥 What “central sensitization” actually means (and why no one explains it)
🔥 The role of sleep, stress, caffeine, and even gut health in nerve sensitivity
🔥 Why passive care alone keeps people stuck (chiro, massage, acupuncture, etc.)
🔥 How behavior change — not just hands-on therapy — creates lasting results

One of the most powerful takeaways?

Pain isn’t always a tissue problem.
Often, it’s a nervous system problem.

And that changes everything.

If you’ve ever been told “nothing’s wrong” — but you don’t feel right…
If you’ve been frustrated bouncing between providers…
If you’re active and just want your body back…

You need to hear this.

This is one of those episodes that might completely reframe how you think about pain.

Can't touch your toes? It probably doesn't have much to do with your hamstrings....

In this video, I'll show you the key areas that need to move in order to touch your toes.

Just stretching your hamstrings isn't enough, and it's certainly not the fastest way to improve your range of motion.

The Movement That Helps Calm Piriformis & Sciatic Nerve Pain

Piriformis syndrome and sciatic pain are brutal — but they’re not a life sentence.

In this video, I’ll show a low-intensity, low-threat movement that actually calms the nervous system instead of aggravating it. I use it personally. I give it to clients. And it works.
