To honor and recognize the contribution of Henrietta Lacks, the “Mother of Modern Medicine”, whose legacy is one of Civil, Patients, and Human Rights. The cornerstone of the foundation in modern medical research, the HeLa cell group are the result of immoral and unethical capture, all of which was rooted in systemic racism.
Last year, Dr. Keely Puchalski spoke about our university and the Ric Scalzo Institute for Botanical Research’s use of HeLa Cells. Citing the importance, not only for Sonoran University and the Ric Scalzo Institute for Botanical Research, but for the development of the polio vaccine and understanding and treating viruses.
