"As a preservation coordinator, we go to all organ procurements and assist with back table set up, flushing, organ packaging, and much more. We basically make sure the OR goes smoothly (with the help of our amazing organ recovery coordinators). All of what we do in the OR directly impacts organs going to recipients for transplant, saving lives. Having such a direct impact on our mission is such a blessing, and I love getting to be a part of it!"

Hannah is a rock climbing enthusiast and loves all things music, she will listen to almost anything!

Organ donation: How does it work? ⬇️

1. Register to become a donor: This is one of the most important steps. Register at an ADOT MVD or online at DonateLifeAZ.org. ✅

2. Hospitalization: Donation can only happen under certain circumstances. Organ donors must pass away in a hospital setting and are typically admitted to the ICU.

Being a donor will NOT negatively impact the care you receive in an emergency.

3. Donation referral: All Arizona hospitals are required by the government to contact Donor Network of Arizona. Donation referrals happen when a patient meets clinical triggers or has already passed away.

If one of the two things above don’t happen, organ donation is not possible, and our team does not communicate with the patient’s family.

4. Authorization: At this point, DNA checks to see if the patient is registered as an organ and tissue donor. Being registered is a legally binding decision, just like a will or living trust.

If the patient isn’t registered, team members from DNA will discuss what’s possible through donation for the family to authorize.

5. Recovery: Organ recovery happens in a sterile OR just like any other surgical procedure. Their lifesaving gifts go on to transplant surgery, and the donor is transported to the funeral home of their (or the family’s) choice.

6. Donor family aftercare: DNA offers a two-year aftercare program to continue supporting donor families through grief. 🫂

Last month, we celebrated the 100th organ donor hero transferred to the donor care center (DCC) and the partnership between Donor Network of Arizona, Banner Health, particularly the Banner –University Medical Center Phoenix team and our hospital partners.

This is a dedicated unit that provides compassionate, specialized care for organ donors while honoring each gift and advancing the mission of donation.
