When feeding changes, one of the hardest parts is deciding what they mean. Is this a short phase that will settle on its own — or something that would benefit from a closer look?

Looking at time, patterns, comfort, and overall impact can help bring clarity. You don’t need to rush to conclusions, and you don’t need to make that decision alone.

Lactation consultations are designed to support this exact process — helping you think through feeding changes and decide next steps, including when waiting and watching makes sense.

Many parents are surprised by how emotionally heavy feeding can feel — even when nothing seems “wrong.” When expectations don’t match reality, it’s common to question yourself or wonder if you should just push through.

Feeding can feel hard for many reasons, and difficulty doesn’t automatically mean something is broken. You’re allowed to name that it feels heavier than expected and to ask for support along the way.

Lactation consultations aren’t only for emergencies. They can help you talk things through, gain perspective, and feel more grounded in what you’re experiencing — whether that means reassurance or small adjustments.

Changes in pump output can be unsettling — especially if pumping used to look different. Many parents worry that fewer ounces automatically mean lower supply, but pump output often changes as babies grow and feeding dynamics shift.

Pumping — especially after feeds — doesn’t always reflect how much milk your baby is getting at the breast. A pump measures your response to the pump, not your overall milk production.

That said, changes in pump output are still worth paying attention to. If you’re noticing a drop, getting little or no milk when pumping, or feeling unsure how pump output fits into your feeding plan, a lactation consultation can help you sort through what’s expected for your stage — and whether any adjustments would be helpful.

Many parents hesitate to reach out for lactation support because nothing feels “wrong enough.”

But IBCLCs don’t just help when feeding is falling apart. We also help parents understand changes, confirm what’s normal, and make small adjustments that build confidence.

You don’t need to be in crisis.
You don’t need to have a diagnosis.
And you don’t need to figure it out alone.

Noticing shorter feeds can bring up a lot of questions.

For many babies, shorter feeds are a normal sign of growth and improved efficiency. But when feeding changes come with discomfort, stress, or uncertainty, it’s okay to pause and take a closer look.

You don’t need to overhaul your feeding plan — and you don’t need to figure it out alone.

Can I have a drink at a holiday party and still breastfeed?
What you need to know about alcohol and breastfeeding this season.

Short answer: Yes — in most cases, you can.

Alcohol does pass into breast milk, but it leaves your milk as it leaves your bloodstream.

What matters most is how much you drink and timing.

✨ One “standard drink” is defined as:
• 12 oz beer
• 5–6 oz wine
• 1.5 oz distilled spirits (one mixed drink)

After one standard drink, many lactation experts recommend waiting about 2–3 hours before nursing if you want to be extra cautious.

A few important reminders:
✨ You do not need to pump and dump just because you had a drink
✨ Pumping and dumping only removes milk — it does not remove alcohol from your body
✨ If you’re sober enough to safely hold and care for your baby, breastfeeding is generally considered safe
✨ Pumping may still be helpful if you’re uncomfortably full while waiting

These guidelines align with recommendations from the CDC and the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine.

As always, consult your healthcare provider with medical questions.

For breastfeeding-specific support, our IBCLCs are here to help. 💛

Pumping in cold weather can feel a little different — tighter fl**ges, drier skin, and even changes in how frozen milk smells. ❄️

Here are a few IBCLC-approved tweaks to make winter pumping smoother:
✨ Warm your fl**ges first.
It helps with comfort and letdown.
✨ Protect your skin.
Winter dryness can make pumping more sensitive.
✨ Check your fl**ge fit.
Breast tissue behaves differently in cold weather — a temporary size shift is normal.
✨ Store milk safely during winter travel.
Extreme cold can damage bags — keep milk in an insulated cooler for stability.

Your pumping journey doesn’t stop for the season — and we’re here to make it a little easier.
