Robotic-Assisted Surgery and pre surgical planning with computer software is a highly useful tool to plan deformity cases for patient education as well as for surgical planning. The custom rods that are provided as part of the service reduces operative time and efforts. This 75yr old with severe back pain and spinal deformity exhausted non surgical management with significant impact on her daily life. Previous spine surgery by another surgeon.

Not every patient with deformity needs surgery but when they do, careful planning is necessary. Plan, measure and execute! Every case of adult/adolescent spinal deformity is planned, carefully evaluated and executed.

The last time these two met was when one was helping the other as a resident for an unstable fracture that resulted in paralysis of all 4’s. Timely surgery is the best shot we can give people like this in life to regain function. Look for her story in the annual Banner health/University of Arizona, Tucson campus report. We take pride in our resident education. It reflects in the choice of orthopedic sub specialist that we inspire.

Principles of management of Adjacent segment disease (problems above a fusion) is to stabilize and decompress (formainal/central or both depending on the MRI). Here is someone in their mid 70’s who failed non sugical management and had the following procedure with immediate relief of his bilateral leg
Pain. With a surgery time of 40 min, 3.5 cm incision and a blood loss of less than 50cc this in my opinion is a safe option for such patients.
