VCSC Coordinated Health Program

VCSC Coordinated Health Program Hello and welcome to the Vigo County School Corporation (VCSC) Coordinated Health Program! Nutrition environment and services. Health education. Health services.

We are using the Centers for Disease Control's (CDC) Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) Model. The Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child, or WSCC model, is CDC’s framework for addressing health in schools. The WSCC model is student-centered and emphasizes the role of the community in supporting the school, the connections between health and academic achievement and the importance of evidence-based school policies and practices. The WSCC model has 10 components:
Physical education and physical activity. Social and emotional climate. Physical environment. Counseling, psychological and social services. Employee wellness. Community involvement. Family engagement.

Together Around the Table – Help Us Bring Thanksgiving to Local Families in Need!

Food insecurity continues to be a growing challenge in our community. Each year, more families struggle to put food on the table, especially during the holidays. This year, the need is greater than ever as uncertainty surrounds federal food assistance programs.

Let’s rally together as a community to support our neighbors and ensure every family has the opportunity to gather around the table and give thanks.

This Thanksgiving, the Coordinated Health Program has identified 150+ local families in need. We’re raising funds to provide each with a Thanksgiving Box filled with everything needed to prepare a hearty holiday meal for 8–10 people. A special thanks to Baesler's Market for working with our team to curate the boxes!

With a gift of just $40, you can sponsor a family and help them enjoy a warm, festive meal together this season. Every dollar helps us spread gratitude and joy throughout the Wabash Valley.
Let’s come together to fill tables and hearts this Thanksgiving.

Thank you to Vigo County School Corporation for helping spread the word!

Families affected by the federal government shutdown may be eligible to apply for the Free and Reduced Meal Program. While income guidelines have not changed, families experiencing a temporary loss of income during the furlough may now qualify for meal benefits. Once a family is on the free and reduced lunch program, they are able to remain on it for the entirety of the school year.

Dr. Abbie Jones with Mindful Growth recently provided professional development for all teachers at Sugar Grove Elementary. Her sessions focused on “Reaching the Unreachable Student” and “Behavior Management in the Classroom.”

She reminded us:
“Children who experience trauma often have overactive stress responses and do not have the capacity to learn.”

This connects directly to the concept of ACEs: Adverse Childhood Experiences. These are traumatic or stressful events that occur in childhood (ages 0–17) and can have long-lasting negative effects on health and well-being.

Take a look at the ACEs graphic. How many children in our community do you know who may be carrying 3, 4, or even all 10 of these burdens? Unfortunately, the number is far too high.

Research shows:
“Children who experience six or more ACEs will have, on average, a 20-year reduction in life expectancy due to predispositions to obesity, heart disease, and other chronic health conditions.”

I found this statistic both striking and motivating. It underscores why we must look at the whole picture of health: mental, physical, and nutritional. Each is equally important and must be prioritized, especially in schools. For some students, school may be the only place they feel safe, supported, and cared for consistently.
