Current read: "If You Tell" based on a true story about a woman with severe mental illness who abuses and neglects her children and anyone who comes across her path who has a desire for love and need for connection. The book details the familes experiences and how the recount what happened to them now as adults. I have not finished reading the book but wanted to share as it's been an interesting read so far.

When you sign up for WLS they provide with you many tools, a dietitian. Education on healthy meal choices. How to read nutritional facts on the foods you're eating and how to make better choices. What balanced meals look like. How to incorporate movement in your life. But what I've seen is often left unaddressed is the emotional attachment one feels to food and the tools on how cope with those emotions. Therapy can play a large role in learning your emotional triggers that cause you to rely on food to manage those feelings. Once you're able to verbalize those feelings you can then identify new ways to cope with them such as mindfulness activities, deep breathing, Journaling, etc.

Many times people often think some one who has undergone bariatric surgery has done it for the sole purpose of seeing the number on the scale go down. Eventually that number stops moving as quickly as it did in the beginning, or within the first 6 months post-op. This can cause people to become disappointed. Lose motivation. Stop working as hard at building lasting habits. That's why it's important to find the small victories. The non-scale victories. The moments we were able to fit into clothes we couldn't wear a year ago. The moment we are able to get on roller coasters again. The time you're able to walk up a five story building without feeling like you're dying. Those are the things that will keep you going. What are some your non-scale victories you've achieved or hope to achieve. Need help setting up goals. A therapist can help you with setting up realistic goals that don't always depend on the scale. Feel free to message me if you have any questions around goal setting.

Have you ever wondered about getting bariatric surgery but had no clue where to start?

Here are five quick start steps that could help you decide if you want to move further along the process.

1. Talk to your primary care doctor about your weight concerns and fluctuations and ask about all of your options, including a referral to bariatric surgery. Once you receive the referral, you can schedule a consultation call with the bariatric surgeon.

2. Check with your medical insurance if they cover bariatric surgery and what some of your out of pocket cost may be. If your insurance does not cover the procedure, you can research other options. In the bariatic community, there are several surgical centers that can be affordable or provide realistic payment plans.

3. If your insurance covers the procedure, there may be a list of prerequisite medical appointments and exams they will expect you to complete before approving the surgery. Some examples are a sleep apnea exam, support groups, weight management groups (I had to complete 12), etc.

4. Join a support group. You won't regret hearing other people's journey.

5. Start to slowly make lifestyle changes. Start to incorporate more protein in your diet. Move more at least 5,000 steps a day, dance, cycle, etc. Bariatric surgery is a tool, but the biggest game changer will be prioritizing your physical as well as mental health.

November is Men’s Health Awareness Month with International Men’s Day falling on November 19th. Men’s Health Awareness Month is dedicated to bringing awareness to a wide range of men’s health issues. As we focus on men this month, we can’t ignore that men tend to be more reluctant to seek help or treatment for their mental health struggles (Chatmon, 2020).
