Trauma isn’t just about memories. It changes the brain, body, and nervous system, affecting how you feel, think, and respond in daily life.
Standard therapy approaches, like general CBT or talk therapy, may focus only on thoughts or behaviors and can unintentionally push you to revisit trauma before you’re ready, which can increase distress, shame, or retraumatization.
A trauma-informed therapist is different. They respect your pace, understand your symptoms as survival responses rather than personal flaws, and focus first on building coping skills, emotional regulation, and a sense of safety. Only when you’re ready do they carefully help you process difficult memories.
Healing is most effective when your therapist understands trauma, prioritizes safety, and helps you feel supported, understood, and in control throughout the process.
