I love this small bit of history in support of all women physicians. I am also a Vassar College graduate who then attended Yale School of Medicine. She was a pioneer who made it possible 90 years later for me to follow in her footsteps.

Louise Farnam, PhD 1916, MD 1920, (1890-1949) was among the first 3 women admitted to the Yale School of Medicine in 1916, at a time when medical studies were considered “unladylike.” By necessity, the first women admitted were exceptional—unlike their male counterparts, who needed only 2 years of college education, they had to hold a college degree.

Louise Farnam graduated from Vassar College in 1912 and earned a PhD in physiological chemistry from Yale in 1916. She graduated from Yale School of Medicine in 1920 with honors, won the Campbell Gold Prize for the highest rank in examinations, and was selected as commencement speaker.

Dr. Farnam's goal in studying medicine was to travel to China to serve as a missionary, a career she began in 1921. In 1930, during the war between nationalists and communists, she stayed behind so a wounded soldier could take her spot on an evacuation vessel. Dr. Farnam and her husband, whom she met in China, had to leave the country in 1933. They went to England, where she continued to practice medicine until her death in 1949.
