This month's Resident Spotlight was on Douglass Steiger. Born 6 miles west of St. Hilaire in 1933, Doug lived on his family farm for 50 years before moving into Thief River Falls. A fount of stories, Douglass told us about find the skeleton of an airplane when he was about 16 or so and how he and a friend covered it in oilcloth and attached it to the back of a car to make it into a glider. Not only were the directions reversed on the stick, but the boys forgot a very important nut on a wing...at one point, Douglass tried to go back down to the ground, but went up and lifted the back wheels of the car off of the ground. The missing nut ended up sending the whole plane spinning like a propeller and sent Doug crashing into a ditch; miraculously, he walked away without a scratch. In true teenaged boy fashion, Doug and his friend had the hilarious idea to cover the plane debris in a bottle of ketchup to prank the neighbor whose ditch it was in.
While there were some stories about the Steiger legacy, this evening was more focused on Doug's personal life. Doug shared that one of his biggest regrets is that he "always thought [he] was too busy" and turned down various travel opportunities throughout his life. He shared fun memories of driving his goat, Flossy, around his front yard with a cart and harness while his sister pushed her cat, Honey Darling, around in her buggy. After losing his first wife to Huntington's, Doug was lucky enough to find his wife of 35+ years, Kay. Interestingly, both of Doug's wives have the same name, are blonde-haired and blue-eyed Norwegians, both were teachers, and both of their mothers had the same name. The whole room agreed that this means they were meant to be together. When asked what the secret to their long marriage is, Kay said the "best ingredients in a good marriage are kindness and respect" and Doug said he was lucky enough to find two good women who have treated him well. An incredibly shy child and young adult, Doug was forced out of said shyness by the nature of being a businessman once the Steiger brand really took off. Between making memories with his family, traveling all over the world for work (his favorite is the Germany/Austria area), and being a force in the tractor world, Douglass Steiger has led a very interesting life; but he remains the same kind, unassuming soul he seems to have been his entire life, always ready with a story and a smile.
Thank you, Doug and Kay, for sharing with us this month.
