Solar energy matters.
So does farmland.
Clean energy should never come at the expense of food security.
We can—and must—protect both. Powering our future shouldn’t mean sacrificing the land that feeds us. With thoughtful planning, renewable energy and agriculture can coexist on the same landscape. One does not have to replace the other.
Not all land is equal. Some areas are best suited for crops, others for energy infrastructure. Prioritizing rooftops, parking lots, brownfields, and degraded land for solar development reduces pressure on productive farmland. So does upgrading existing sites before expanding into new ones.
There are also hybrid solutions. Agrivoltaics—placing solar panels in ways that allow crops or grazing underneath—can shade sensitive plants, reduce water loss, and provide farmers with an additional income stream. In the right conditions, food production and energy generation can strengthen each other.
Because a sustainable future isn’t just about clean power.
It’s also about resilient food systems, working landscapes, and long-term stewardship of the land that sustains us.
