As a chaplain, I put together a "Weekly Pause" for the staff team where I work — short reflections to help us slow down and listen. During Lent, I'm writing my own reflections, and it occurred to me that there might be a wider audience who'd appreciate these guided opportunities to:

slow down
get in touch with our bodies
listen
breathe
respond…

If that sounds like something your soul needs this season, read this week's reflection and consider signing up to receive them weekly.

I came across this beautiful poem by Wendell Berry as I was cleaning out my car. Sure needed it today…

The Peace of Wild Things

When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life
and my children's lives may be,

I go and lie down
where the wood drake rests
in his beauty on the water,
and the great heron feeds.

I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives
with forethought of grief.

I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars waiting with their light.

For a time
I rest in the grace of the world,
and am free.

Saturday PM Winter musings…

So touched by this… Get • “When we close our eyes on this earth and
we open our eyes into eternity,
we’re gonna see the face of a Father
who’s been singing over us our whole life.
And we’re gonna gasp,
“You’re the guy!
You’re the guy who’s been
singing through every sunset,
through every wave that
the wind blew through.
You’re the guy who’s been
singing through the trees and
whispering through the flowers.
You’re the burning bush around every
corner that’s been calling my name my whole life.
As the angels were singing, the whole
earth was full of Your glory.
You’re the guy.”

This moment was pulled from a teaching during our 18 Inch Journey discipleship school.

“Trauma-informed psychology helps name what many of us have experienced: some of our strongest reactions begin beneath conscious thought. Before we can find words, the body may shift into a threat response—tightening, bracing, shutting down, or moving into reactivity. In these moments, we may feel flooded, defensive, anxious, disconnected, or overwhelmed.
This is why spiritual growth isn’t only a matter of “thinking differently.” It also involves learning how to stay present—with God, with ourselves, and with others—when our inner alarm system turns on.”

The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius are not primarily a set of readings or spiritual ideas to understand. They are a daily practice of encounter—a way of slowly becoming free through repeated experience of God’s presence, love, and guidance. In the 18th Annotation, the Exercises unfold throu...
