…And How Medigap Helps You Avoid Them

Introduction
Medicare can feel overwhelming. I help people turning 65 understand their options—and avoid surprises. If you're exploring your choices, this guide will help you make a confident decision.
1. Mistaking “Zero Premium” for “Zero Cost”
Medicare Advantage plans often advertise $0 premiums, but many come with high deductibles, copays, and out-of-pocket limits—sometimes up to $9,000 or more. Medigap plans offer more predictable costs with fewer unexpected expenses.
2. Ignoring Provider Restrictions
MA plans typically operate within networks. If your doctor or hospital isn't in-network, you could be paying full price—or be denied service. Medigap allows you to see any provider who accepts Medicare—no networks, no referrals.
3. Missing the One-Time Medigap Enrollment Window
After your 6-month Medigap open enrollment period when you turn 65, switching to a Medigap plan could require medical underwriting. You might be denied coverage or charged more. Plan ahead and get the right coverage the first time.
4. Overestimating Coverage for Serious Illnesses
Advantage plans often require prior authorizations and limit access to top specialists or facilities—especially for serious or complex conditions. Medigap works seamlessly with Original Medicare, giving you broader access to care.
5. Believing Extra Benefits Are Always Free
Extra benefits like dental or vision are enticing, but they’re often limited or come with hidden costs. Don’t assume those benefits outweigh the core medical coverage differences.
6. Not Realizing Plan Details Change Every Year
Medicare Advantage plans can change networks, costs, and coverage annually. Your plan this year may not meet your needs next year. Medigap plans are standardized and typically have more stable coverage over time.
7. Assuming Advantage Plans Cover You While Traveling
Many MA plans limit coverage to specific geographic areas. If you travel frequently or live in multiple states (e.g., snowbirds), you may find yourself out-of-network. Medigap works anywhere in the U.S. where Medicare is accepted.
Take Note:
Yes, I do sell both Medicare Advantage Plans and Medicare Supplement plans. Everyone has a unique situation. That’s why you should work with an experienced expert when making Medicare decisions.
Also, if you find yourself on a Medicare Advantage Plan and you can’t switch over to a Medicare Supplement plan because of the required medical underwriting, I can suggest that you schedule a review with me to see if a Hospital Indemnity plan might be a good fit for you to cover any vulnerable out-of-pocket expenses that your Medicare Advantage Plan has.
