Amidst all the uncertainty we’ve experienced this year, we’ve realized that taking time for ourselves is critical.

Fellow Therapists:

A few tips for creating healthy boundaries with your clients! We all know healthy boundaries are important, but that doesn't always translate easily. A few things that help me provide quality care while still keeping good boundaries...

1. Limiting my emails and phone calls to 1 hour before and after my client schedule. I know that it's hard to get to these in between sessions, so I have that time on the book ends of my day. The one exception is a crisis call, which leads to #2...

2. Even during a crisis call, redirect the conversation to very concrete action steps/coping skills and the next session (assuming the client is safe). This both protects your time and empowers the client.

3. Be clear on cancellation policies and fees upfront. And be consistent!

4. Practice using a mental container at the end of the day. I teach almost all my clients to use the visualization of having a mental container to put anxiety, unfinished business from session, and other intrusive thoughts in. I use my container too! It's important that we take time to shut off our work brains and have a personal life.

Quick Coping Skills to Replace Self-Harm!

If you self harm and want to decrease it or stop altogether, here are a few quick distraction techniques to give yourself an alternative.

1. Hold ice cubes for as long as you can stand it.
2. Alternate a heating pad and an ice pack on a part of your body where you usually self harm.
3. Scream! Into a pillow or in your (parked!) car
4. Snap a rubber band or hair tie on your wrist
5. Listen to loud music.
6. Watch funny videos on TikTok

The key to any distraction skill is to get your mind off the behavior long enough so that you can decide to do something else! And of course, if you are struggling with self harm, we recommend seeking the support of a therapist. Give us a call if you're in the Denver area, or we'd be happy to help you find referrals.

That week-long self care retreat in Bali feeling a little out of reach? There are so many other (read: simpler, easier, & cheaper) ways to have a self care retreat! Check out my latest post on Life Goals Mag all about how to create your own retreat.
