96-year-old Theresa Turco suffered a severe stroke in March, leaving her dependent for all of her mobility and self-care activities. After 5 days in the hospital, she was inappropriately discharged to a skilled nursing facility. Once there, family immediately became concerned for her safety when no one came in to complete her admission for several hours. Instead of waiting to see if things got better, family brought her home and reached out to Denver Regional Rehabilitation Hospital asking how we could help. Because Theresa had a Medicare Advantage plan, she would require authorization to admit to our facility, something that now felt impossible given that she was home and not in a hospital receiving care. Instead of making Theresa return to the hospital to only delay her recovery further, we did what no one else would - we admitted her the following day and fought her insurance once she was already under the skilled care and observation of our physicians and therapists in one of Colorado's only Joint Commission Stroke Certified rehab hospitals. Within 2 days, Theresa was fully approved for 3 weeks of intensive rehabilitation and to no one's surprise, she made a remarkable recovery and returned home today to be with her loving family.
If you have a loved one who has suffered from a stroke, especially if they have a Medicare Advantage plan, let us know how we can help. We won't let anyone dictate the type of care you have access to just because insurance tries to.
