Interstitial Cystitis (IC) — also called Bladder Pain Syndrome (BPS) — is a chronic condition that causes bladder pressure, pain, and frequent or urgent urination, without an infection. It can range from mild discomfort to severe, daily pelvic pain.

Key Facts:
🔹 Not caused by infection, but often feels like a UTI
🔹 More common in women, but can affect all genders
🔹 Symptoms can come and go (flares & remissions)
🔹 Often overlaps with pelvic floor dysfunction, IBS, endometriosis, or fibromyalgia

Common Symptoms:
🛑 Pain in the bladder, pelvis, or urethra
⏱️ Feeling the need to p*e constantly, even if the bladder is not full
🚽 Waking up multiple times at night to urinate (nocturia)
🔥 Pain during or after urination
🧡 Pain during or after sexual activity

Many people with IC have tight, overactive pelvic floor muscles. Physical therapy helps by:
✅ Releasing muscle tension
✅ Reducing nerve hypersensitivity
✅ Improving blood flow
✅ Teaching bladder calming strategies

💡 The Core Isn’t Just Abs — It’s a Whole System!

Let’s talk about the real core:
🫁 Diaphragm
🏋️‍♀️ Transverse abdominis
🔗 Multifidus (deep spine muscles)
⚖️ Pelvic floor

Together, they form a pressure system that supports your spine, posture, and breathing. When one part is out of sync it can lead to:
🔹 Pain
🔹 Poor posture
🔹 Weakness
🔹 Difficulty coordinating
🔹 Balance Deficits
🔹 And any number of pelvic floor issues (leaking, prolapse, urgency, etc.)

Pelvic floor physical therapy helps restore balance in your core system—not just with kegels, but with breathwork, alignment, movement, and muscle coordination.

✨ The result? Better posture, stronger core, and a happy pelvic floor!

May is mental health awareness month!

So much of Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy is physical, but there is much that can impact the pelvic floor outside of the body. The brain-body connection is incredibly influential in your body's responses and, although we are experts at addressing the physical, we need both to be healthy for the greatest success. This is where working together with a mental health specialist is a game-changer!

Optimizing health is a team effort and requires a holistic approach. We are so happy and proud to work alongside our amazing mental health community here in the Conejo Valley!

12/18/2024

Pelvic physical therapy can be effective for managing vaginal dryness, especially when dryness is related to pelvic floor dysfunction, hormonal changes, or post-menopausal symptoms. Pelvic PT can help:

🩸 Improved Blood Flow to the Pelvic Region
Pelvic PT often includes exercises, such as diaphragmatic breathing and pelvic floor relaxation, to enhance blood flow to the pelvic area, which can increase natural lubrication and improve tissue health.

🧘 Relaxation Techniques for Muscle Tension
Pelvic floor muscles can become tense or overactive due to stress, pain, or trauma, reducing blood flow and lubrication. Pelvic PT uses manual therapy, biofeedback, and relaxation techniques to release muscle tension, improving tissue elasticity and comfort.

⚡️ Addressing Pain and Discomfort
Pelvic PT can help reduce pain caused by vaginal dryness by desensitizing painful areas and improving the flexibility of the tissues. When pain decreases, anxiety related to in*******se may also decrease, reducing further dryness.

💦 Education on Lubricants and Moisturizers
Pelvic PTs often educate patients on different types of vaginal moisturizers and lubricants, providing guidance on choosing products that are pH-balanced, non-irritating, and safe for use with pelvic dryness.

👐 Manual Therapy to Improve Tissue Mobility
Therapists can use manual techniques to gently stretch and mobilize vaginal tissues, enhancing their flexibility, improving moisture retention, and supporting hydration.

📝 Guidance on Hormone Support (if applicable)
While pelvic PTs cannot prescribe hormones, they often work in collaboration with other healthcare providers to coordinate care, including discussing topical hormone options for vaginal dryness when appropriate.

💪 Exercises for Pelvic Floor Strength and Coordination
Exercises that strengthen and coordinate pelvic floor muscles support blood flow and reduce dryness by optimizing vaginal and urethral function.

Vaginal and re**al dilators are medical devices used for therapeutic purposes to gently stretch, expand, or maintain the flexibility of the vaginal or re**al tissues. Here’s a breakdown of their uses:

Vaginal Dilators-

1. Vaginal Stenosis: To prevent or treat narrowing of the vaginal ca**l, often due to radiation therapy or surgery.
2. Vaginismus: To help with involuntary muscle spasms that cause pain or discomfort during vaginal pe*******on.
3. Post-Surgical Recovery: To prevent scar tissue formation after surgeries like vaginoplasty or other gynecological procedures.
4. Gender-Affirming Care: Used post-vaginoplasty to maintain the depth and width of the neovagina.
5. Pelvic Floor Dysfunction: Helps relax the pelvic floor muscles when they are overly tight or in spasm.
6. Post-Menopausal Vaginal Atrophy: To stretch the tissues and make vaginal exams or in*******se more comfortable.

Re**al Dilators-

1. A**l or Re**al Stenosis: To widen a narrow re**um or a**s, which may result from surgery, trauma, or certain diseases (e.g., Crohn’s disease).
2. Anismus: A condition where the muscles around the a**s do not relax properly during a bowel movement, leading to constipation. Dilators can help train the muscles to relax.
3. Hemorrhoid Surgery Recovery: After surgery for hemorrhoids or other re**al surgeries, dilators may be used to prevent scar tissue formation and to maintain the flexibility of the a**l ca**l.
4. Pelvic Floor Dysfunction: Similar to vaginal dilators, re**al dilators can help with pelvic floor issues like spasms or hypertonicity (overly tight muscles).
5. Anore**al Malformations: Used in some cases of congenital abnormalities or surgeries to maintain or create normal function in the anore**al area.
6. Constipation Management: In some cases, re**al dilators may be recommended as part of therapy for chronic constipation related to muscular issues.

Both types of dilators are typically used under the guidance of a healthcare professional, such as a pelvic floor therapist, and are part of a gradual, structured treatment plan.
