Abby Hostetler was working the front desk at Three Rivers Health Hospital when she heard the severe weather alert on the scanner. As she made a final sweep of the lobby, that's when she saw him.

She recognized 86-year-old Del Eastes right away as he slowly walked through the doors. But the long-time snack bar volunteer didn't look well, so she hurried over to help him. Looking out the window, the scene turned terrifying.

A tornado was barreling through the community.

"I couldn't go hide, I had to go help him," Abby said. She looped her arm around Del's and led him through the lobby, swiftly shielding him with her body in a corner. That's when storm winds pushed through the building.

The doors blew in. Windows shattered. Floor mats lifted off the ground, artwork was ripped off the walls, and debris was flying in at them.

Abby held Del against the wall until the tornado had passed.

"She knew exactly what she was doing. She's really kind of a hero," Del said. "I'd say she saved my life."

And it was all caught on camera.

As Women’s History Month comes to a close, we’re proud to reflect on the powerful stories shared by women across Beacon. Our weekly features highlighted the women whose voices, experiences and everyday contributions shape our culture and strengthen the care we provide to our communities.

From mentoring colleagues and supporting teams to advancing patient care and leading meaningful change, these stories remind us that leadership takes many forms and that lasting impact often begins with showing up for others. We’re grateful to every leader who took the time to share her story and to everyone who took a moment to read, reflect and celebrate alongside us.

Three Rivers Community, thank you.

You have been showing up for Three Rivers Health hospital in ways we did not expect and will not forget. So many generous hands ready to work. You've seen us moving forward and you've wanted to help. That says everything about what this community is made of.

As we continue assessing and repairing medical office buildings across our campus, and for your safety, we ask that you avoid active construction zones and direct that same kindness and heart toward neighbors who need it most right now.

If you're not sure where to start, the St. Joseph County United Way is coordinating community volunteers and donations at 269.467.9099.

While our teams continue assessing damage on our hospital campus today, the Three Rivers community is showing up in ways that are hard to put into words.

A father and his teenage son pulled up in their SUV with coolers of food and drinks, asking how they could help. Two teenagers walked the campus carrying armfuls of Little Caesars pizza boxes, offering slices to anyone they could find. And military service members joined us to help clear debris, then asked if we had a spare American flag.

Ours had been ripped and tattered when the severe weather ripped through Three Rivers on Friday. We found a spare, and they raised it.

"When you have something like this happen, it brings a community together," said Maria Lutz, Facilities Director for our southwest Michigan hospitals, who was there to see every moment of it.

Our Three Rivers Health hospital and emergency department remain open, and our teams continue to care for our community. This community's heart has never been more visible, and we are grateful to be part of it.

We continue to hold everyone affected in our thoughts.
